Nous sommes tous vaguement tourmentés du besoin de connaître un monde qui nous paraît un cachot, parce que nous ne l'avons pas choisi pour demeure; il me semble que je ne pourrais sortir en paix de cet étroit univers, si je n'avais tenté de parcourir et d'explorer ma prison. Plus je l'examine et plus elle s'embellit et s'agrandit à mes yeux. Voir pour savoir: telle est la devise du voyageur; c'est la mienne; je ne l'ai pas prise, la nature me l'a donnée. Comparer les divers modes d'existence des nations de la terre, étudier la manière de penser et de sentir des peuples qui l'habitent, apprécier les rapports que Dieu a mis entre leur histoire, leurs moeurs et leur physionomie; voyager en un mot: c'est un inépuisable aliment fourni à ma curiosité, un éternel moyen d'activité à ma pensée; m'empêcher de parcourir le monde, c'eût été me traiter comme un savant à qui l'on déroberait la clef de sa bibliothèque. Mais si la curiosité m'emporte, un attachement qui tient des affections de famille me ramène. Je fais alors le résumé de mes observations, et je choisis parmi mon butin les idées qu'il me paraît le plus utile de répandre. Pendant mon séjour en Russie, comme pendant toutes mes autres courses, deux pensées, ou plutôt deux sentiments n'ont cessé de dominer mon coeur: l'amour de la France qui me rend sévère dans les jugements que je porte sur les étrangers et sur les Français eux-mêmes, car nulle affection passionnée n'est indulgente; et l'amour de l'humanité. Astolphe Louis Léonor, marquis de Custine, né à Niderviller (Moselle) le 18 mars 1790 et mort à Saint-Gratien (Seine-et-Oise) le 25 septembre 1857 (à 67 ans), est un écrivain français, célèbre pour son ouvrage La Russie en 1839, parfois considéré comme le pendant pour la Russie de l'essai De la démocratie en Amérique de Tocqueville. Biographie Astolphe est le deuxième fils d'Armand de Custine et de Delphine de Sabran. Sa famille est durement affectée par la Révolution: son grand-père, le général révolutionnaire Adam Philippe de Custine est guillotiné en août 1793 et son père en janvier 1794, sa mère est incarcérée à la prison parisienne de Sainte-Pélagie, puis aux Carmes jusqu'à la chute de Robespierre en juillet 1794. En 1795, la famille de Custine retourne en Lorraine. Astolphe passe alors sous la responsabilité morale de son précepteur alsacien, nommé Bertoecher. Sa mère, Delphine de Custine, connue pour son intelligence et sa grande beauté, fréquente les salons littéraires, se lie d'amitié avec Madame de Staël qui lui dédie son roman Delphine et noue une relation amoureuse avec François-René de Chateaubriand en 1802. La disgrâce d'un des amis les plus chers de Delphine de Custine, Joseph Fouché, ministre de la Police de Napoléon, provoque la rupture d'avec le régime impérial en 1810. Commence alors un périple européen qui mène Astolphe et sa mère en Allemagne et en Suisse en 1811, en Italie l'année suivante. En 1814, Delphine et son fils rejoignent à Bâle le roi Louis XVIII et le comte d'Artois qui préparent la Restauration. C'est alors qu'Astolphe rentre dans l'armée et le corps diplomatique, assistant au congrès de Vienne aux côtés de Talleyrand.
