La vibración de la multitud cortesana, un bramido que vino corriendo de la galería del costado Sur, y que al pronto nos pareció racha de impetuoso viento que agitaba los velos y mantos de las señoras, y precipitaba a los caballeros a una carrera loca tropezando en sus propios espadines, nos hizo comprender que algo grave ocurría por aquella parte... Ha sido un clérigo, oí que decían; y en efecto, recordé yo haber visto entre el gentío, poco antes, a un sacerdote anciano, cuyas facciones reconocí sin poder traer su nombre a mi memoria... Hacia allá volé, adelantándome a los que iban presurosos, o tropezando con damas que aterradas volvían, y lo primero que vi fue un oficial de Alabarderos que a la Princesita llevaba en alto hacia las habitaciones reales. Luego vi a la Reina llevada en volandas... ¡Atentado, puñalada... un cura! ¿Había sido herida gravemente? Muerta no iba. Creí oírla pronunciar algunas palabras; vi que movía su hermoso brazo casi desnudo, y la mano ensangrentada. Rápida visión fue todo esto, atropellada procesión de carnes, terciopelos, gasas, mangas bordadas de oro, tricornios guarnecidos de plata, Montpensier lívido, el infante don Francisco casi llorando... Al Rey no le vi: iba por el lado de la pared, detrás del montón fugitivo... Vi a Tamames; creo que vi también a Balazote...Mi fogosa curiosidad de lo anormal, de lo extraordinario, de lo que borra y destruye la vulgar semejanza de todas las cosas, me abrió paso, a codazo limpio, hacia el grupo donde esperaba ver al criminal. No sé cómo llegué vi la cabeza cana de Merino, a la altura en que vemos la cabeza del que está de rodillas; la vi luego subir, y tras ella negras vestiduras nada pulcras... Apenas distinguí el rostro... Llevaban al reo hacia la Sala de Alabarderos, por detrás empujado, por delante a rastras. Entre tantas manos que querían conducirle, y al son confuso de las imprecaciones y denuestos, se me perdió aquella figura que yo quería ver en los instantes que siguen al punto trágico, ya que en este punto mismo no logré verla. Quise entrar; no me dejaron. En aquel momento me sentí cogido por el brazo, y volviéndome encaré con mi suegro, el señor don Feliciano de Emparán, en quien reconocí la imagen del terror: su boca era como la de una máscara griega, de la guardarropía de Melpómene, y sus cabellos, si no los empobreciera la calvicie, habrían estado en punta como las crines de un escobillón... Figúrate -me dijo-, que lo he visto tan de cerca, tan de cerca, que más no cabe... Pasó Su Majestad... la vi pararse, la vi sonreír mirando hacia atrás, como si llamara a una persona de la comitiva: esta persona era el Nuncio... el Nuncio de Su Santidad, que se adelantó pegándome un codazo por esta parte. Y cuando me volví, por esta otra parte me dieron otro codazo. Era el maldito clérigo, que se abalanzó, se arrodilló como para dar un memorial... le vi asestar la puñalada... Creí que la tierra se abría para tragarnos a todos... No sé si la Reina cayó o no cayó... Nos abalanzamos al criminal... Yo le oí decir... no sueño, no; yo le oí decir, no una vez, sino dos: Ya tienes bastante.
