Agénor de Morlux, que nous avons laissé à six heures du soir quittant Antoinette sur le seuil de sa porte en lui disant: À demain ! était parti deux heures après pour la Bretagne ? C'est ce que nous allons expliquer. Le vicomte Karle de Morlux avait admirablement dressé ses batteries, de concert avec maître Timoléon, et il n'était pas homme à compromettre la partie qu'il jouait par une négligence quelconque. Or, en faisant disparaître Antoinette, il eût été de la dernière imprudence de laisser Agénor à Paris, attendu que les personnes qui s'inquiéteraient de cette disparition ne manqueraient pas de courir chez lui. Agénor avait l'habitude de monter chaque jour chez lui vers six heures, soit pour s'habiller quand il ne dînait pas à son club, soit pour prendre ses lettres. Il avait donc fait ce jour-là comme de coutume et il était allé tout droit à la rue de Surène en quittant Antoinette. À la porte de sa maison, il fut assez étonné de voir le phaéton à deux chevaux de son oncle Karle. Un des deux grooms lui dit: - M. le vicomte attend M. le baron chez lui. Agénor eut un battement de coeur; il monta lestement l'escalier et atteignit l'entresol. C'était là qu'était son appartement de garçon. M. le vicomte Karle de Morlux attendait son neveu au coin du feu, dans le fumoir, un puros aux lèvres, comme s'il n'avait que trente ans. - Eh bien ! jeune amoureux, lui dit-il en le voyant entrer, tu ne t'attendais pas à me trouver ici ? - Non, mon oncle. - Et tu ne sais pas ce que j'y viens faire ? - Non, mon oncle. - Je viens te parler de mariage. Agénor rougit. - Mon père vous a donc tout dit ? - Oui, répondit Karle, et je suis ravi. - De mon mariage ? - De l'intention que tu as de te marier, du moins. Quand tu seras dans ton ménage, ton père et moi serons tranquilles et ne craindrons plus que tu n'épouses quelque demoiselle scandaleuse qui te déshonorerait. - Ah ! mon oncle, dit l'amoureux Agénor, si vous saviez comme elle est jolie. - Tant mieux ! - Et spirituelle... - Tant mieux encore ! - Ainsi, vous m'approuvez ? - De point en point. Ne te l'ai-je pas déjà prouvé ? - Comment cela ? dit Agénor en ouvrant de grands yeux. - Tu as pourtant vu ton père dans la journée ? - Sans doute. - Et il a dû te dire que je m'étais occupé du protégé de ton Antoinette... de Milon. - Ah ! c'est juste, pardonnez-moi, mon bon oncle, car je perds un peu la tête... Mais... du reste... je crois qu'on vous a mal renseigné. - Hein ? fit M. de Morlux en tressaillant. - Oui, mon bon oncle... Je crois que vous n'aurez pas besoin de demander la grâce de Milon... - Plaît-il ? - Figurez-vous, poursuivit Agénor avec volubilité, que j'ai vu ce soir Mlle Antoinette... Oh ! par hasard... je l'ai rencontrée... et tandis que nous causions, elle a jeté un cri en me montrant un homme dans une voiture... C'était Milon !.....
