El desarrollo de ese conflicto concede a Wharton la oportunidad de exponer algunas reflexiones interesantes sobre la maternidad.Es evidente que Wharton se acomoda en La renuncia a los juicios sobre la mujer de su tiempo, cuando una madre, sólo por el hecho de serlo, debía postergarse siempre en beneficio de sus hijos. Es de hecho en ese postergamiento donde la madre, incluso la mujer en general, debe buscar su realización. Pero esa realidad no le resta valor a una obra interesante, algo predecible en algunos aspectos, pero con el marchamo de una de las mejores escritoras de la literatura norteamericana.
