La Princesse de Clèves A côté du roman épistolaire, qui remporte un grand succès avec les Lettres Portugaises de Guilleragues en 1669, un autre type de roman parvient à maturité le roman d'analyse. C'est Madame de La Fayette avec la Princesse de Clèves qui ouvre la voie de l'analyse psychologique, en 1678. L'histoire de la Princesse de Clèves, épouse aimée d'un mari pour lequel elle n'a que de l'estime et amante du Duc de Nemours à qui elle se refuse par sens de l'honneur, a ému le public qui souleva une querelle autour de l'aveu de la Princesse à son mari. Cette passion vouée au malheur sert d'exemple pour les moralistes qui condamnent les dérives du coeur. Mme de La Fayette a écrit l'histoire de Melle de Chartres avec l'aide de Ménage, Segrais (auteurs célèbres de l'époque) et surtout avec La Rochefoucauld, son grand ami, auteur des Maximes. Les vertus austères de son éducation lui a inspiré l'idée de son roman. A la fois nouvelle historique (le roman se déroule sous le règne des Valois, au siècle précédent), roman mondain (il se passe à la cour) et roman précieux (son thème principal est l'amour), la Princesse de Clèves propose une réflexion sur l'Homme, les passions. Mme de La Fayette publia ses oeuvres de façon anonyme car elle ne souhaitait pas passer pour un auteur, dans une société qui condamnait le roman comme genre frivole et corrupteur. La Princesse est considéré comme une nouvelle en cela que la narration est épurée, simplifiée, loin des péripéties romanesques du roman-fleuve. Ce genre a d'ailleurs vécu, Melle de Scudéry passe de 10 volumes de Clélie à 1 volume de Célinte en 1661. La nouvelle favorise aussi le goût de plus en plus appuyé pour la vraisemblance, le naturel, la mesure, propre à la pensée janséniste. Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, comtesse de La Fayette (ou Lafayette), née le 18 mars 1634 à Paris et morte le 25 mai 1693 dans la même ville, est une femme de lettres française. Biographie Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne est née dans une famille aisée de petite noblesse, qui gravite dans l'entourage du cardinal de Richelieu. Sa mère, fille d'un médecin du roi, est au service de la duchesse Rose-Madeleine d'Aiguillon. Son père, Marc Pioche, qui espère faire oublier ses origines bourgeoises en se faisant appeler de La Vergne, écuyer du roi, meurt alors qu'elle n'a que quinze ans. L'année suivante, en 1650, elle devient dame d'honneur de la reine Anne d'Autriche et commence à acquérir une éducation littéraire auprès du grammairien Ménage qui lui enseigne l'italien et le latin. Ce dernier l'introduit alors dans les salons littéraires en vogue de Catherine de Rambouillet, de la Marquise du Plessis-Bellière et de Madeleine de Scudéry. Elle épousa par la suite un certain comte "De Foucher"; il est à cette époque un noble ayant une forte influence sur un grand domaine, n'hésitant pas à exercer son pouvoir par la force. En 1650, sa mère se remarie avec Renaud de Sévigné, un oncle du mari de la marquise de Sévigné; les deux femmes, qui ont huit ans de différence, deviendront pour toujours les plus chères amies du monde .
