Il libro tratta i cambiamenti della prima adolescenza cercando di rendere giustizia al grande e difficile lavoro che ragazzi e famiglie fanno per accogliere il cambiamento che inevitabilmente si impone. Questi anni, che vanno grosso modo dai tredici ai sedici anni sono caratterizzati dal pieno sviluppo puberale e dallo stravolgimento dei legami. Gran parte di queste trasformazioni non risultano immediatamente comprensibili e condivisibili in quanto avvengono a livello preconscio spesso sotto forma di sensazioni. L'adulto ha così il compito di saper sostare in una posizione di attesa, nella condizione di non capire ciò che sta vivendo il proprio figlio e nello stesso tempo cercare il modo di non fare mancare il proprio appoggio. "Cosa sta accadendo?", si chiede spesso il genitore di fronte al cambiamento del proprio figlio o figlia in adolescenza. "Cosa sto diventando?", si chiede l'adolescente. I genitori si trovano a dover lasciare spazio e autonomia ai figli, provando a gestire le preoccupazioni e le aspettative su di loro. Il tentativo di questo testo è di condividere alcuni vissuti e passaggi relativi a questa particolare età da un punto di vista psicodinamico e relazionale. L'intento è quello di favorire una comprensione anche emotiva della trasformazione adolescenziale e per questo risultano abbastanza frequenti i richiami all'adolescente che l'adulto è stato. Ciò che avviene nel ragazzo o nella ragazza è il dischiudersi di una potenzialità l'essere gettato nel mondo, in modo unico e specifico, percependolo e rimanendone attonito ed eccitato. È qualcosa di prezioso che, se non si distorce in elementi distruttivi e autodistruttivi, rappresenta la forza propulsiva del singolo e dell'intera società. Penso che come adulti, più o meno soddisfatti delle nostre vite, abbiamo il compito di consegnare ai nostri figli l'idea che si possa giocare con le cose del mondo. Gioco nella sua accezione più nobile, cioè come luogo privilegiato di sperimentazione di sé, di incontro e responsabilità. Le riflessioni sono rivolte in particolar modo a genitori, educatori e adulti alla ricerca di una comprensione del mondo adolescenziale e disposti a percorrere dentro di sé una riscoperta del senso della propria adolescenza, per connettersi ai propri ragazzi e, perché no, per guardare al futuro con più curiosità e fiducia.
