Furieux, Garaud incendie l'usine, tue Labroue qui l'a surpris, menace Jeanne qui l'a vu, et fuit en Amérique sous le nom de Paul Harmant. Qui l'inquiéterait ? On croit qu'il a péri dans le feu, et tout incrimine Jeanne. Condamnée, elle perd la raison. Quand la vue d'un incendie réveille sa mémoire, elle n'a plus qu'une idée: s'évader pour retrouver ses enfants. Sous l'identité de Lise Perrin, elle devient porteuse de pain. Près de vingt ans ont passé et son espoir est mince de réussir dans ses recherches. Mais ces vingt ans ont ramené à Paris Paul Harmant - Garaud, riche industriel protégé par la prescription. Le fils de l'ingénieur assassiné et ses amis se lancent sur sa route. Ils deviendront, pour son châtiment, les amis de maman Lison, la porteuse de pain. A Propos Montépin: Xavier Henri Aymon Perrin, comte de Montépin, né à Apremont (Haute-Saône) le 10 mars 1823 et mort à Paris le 30 avril 1902, est un romancier populaire français. Il repose au cimetière ancien (cimetière communal de l'Ouest) 6e division, de Boulogne-Billancourt dans les Hauts-de-Seine à côté de la tombe de sa femme Louise Lesueur et de celle de Caroline Lesueur. Auteur de romans-feuilletons et de drames populaires, il s'illustra dans le feuilleton. Il est notamment l'auteur de l'un des best-sellers du xixe siècle, La Porteuse de pain, paru de 1884 à 1889, qui a été adaptée successivement au théâtre, au cinéma et à la télévision. Le Médecin des pauvres, paru en feuilleton de janvier à mai 1861 dans le journal illustré Les Veillées parisiennes, fut un plagiat d'un roman historique de Louis Jousserandot, un avocat républicain. Jousserandot et Montépin s'assignèrent mutuellement en justice. Le procès eut lieu en janvier 1863. Les deux plaignants furent renvoyés dos à dos et condamnés tous deux aux dépens. Mais la défaite fut bien du côté de Jousserandot, l'ancien proscrit républicain qui avait bien peu de chances de gagner face au riche et célèbre Xavier de Montépin, adulé des lecteurs et politiquement proche du pouvoir impérial en place. Les Filles de plâtre, paru en 1855, fit également scandale et valut à Montépin une condamnation à trois mois d'emprisonnement et 500 francs d'amende en 1856. Xavier de Montépin utilisait un ou des nègres, comme beaucoup des auteurs à succès de son époque qui produisaient du roman-feuilleton au kilomètre . Le nom de l'un d'eux-Maurice Jogand-est connu.
