Una gema de la etnología antillana: La tesis magistral del Prof. René León sobre la Poesía Afrocubana En el momento de la publicación de su primera edición, hace cuatro décadas, la novedad aportada por este original ensayo sobre las raíces de la poesía afrocubana consistió en identificar, por un lado, la amplitud de la presencia de los vocablos de origen bantú, yoruba y abakuá tanto en el habla cubana como en la Poesía afrocubana -resultado de la transculturación de la poesía africana transmitida por tradición oral y volcada en los moldes poéticos españoles-; y, por otro lado, el reflejo que en esa producción literaria ha tenido el mestizaje que ha conformado el modo de ser del cubano. Toda África central y meridional es territorio bantú, si bien los pueblos que habitan dicho territorio hablan más de 400 lenguas diferentes aunque con raíces comunes. Los Yorubas se asentaban en lo que se conoce hoy como Nigeria, a lo largo del río Niger; llegaron a organizarse en varios reinos, el más importante de los cuales fue Benín, que alcanzó doce siglos de historia. La designación de abakuá no denota un origen étnico común, más allá de identificar la membresía en una sociedad secreta creada -la única de esta naturaleza surgida en todo el continente americano- hacia la segunda década del siglo XIX por esclavos negros originarios de la ciudad-estado de Calabar, en el delta del río Niger (de ahí que a los originarios de esa región se les conociese como carabalíes); dicha sociedad se extendió, con el tiempo, tanto a negros como a mulatos y blancos, y subsiste al día de hoy. Esta obra del Prof. René León sentó cátedra en el momento de su publicación, y la conserva en la actualidad, como una referencia bibliográfica indispensable para cualquier investigador, estudioso o interesado -en el presente o en el futuro- en la formación del sustrato de la cultura cubana y, sin duda, de la antillana. - Dr. Roberto Soto Santana
