Synopsis du livre:
Charlie Mears est un employé de banque de vingt ans avec des aspirations littéraires dont la motivation à ce moment-là est d'écrire ce qu'il considère comme "La plus belle histoire du monde". Dans certaines salles de billard, il coïncide avec un écrivain, à qui il montre les bases de son histoire, qu'il intitulera L'histoire d'un navire . Il sera absorbé par l'imagination débordante avec laquelle le garçon décrit le navire comme un galot grec, fournissant toutes sortes de détails très difficiles à connaître par un simple garçon qui était employé de banque et qui n'avait pratiquement rien lu jusqu'à présent.
Comment est-il possible qu'un si jeune garçon, qui a à peine lu, puisse raconter des aventures historiques avec autant de facilité et de détails ? Il y a ensuite des rendez-vous entre les deux, dans lesquels Charlie continue de décrire très clairement en détail, les situations sur le bateau, les rameurs, la disposition des rames...etc.
Après des séances successives, l'écrivain arrive à la conclusion terrifiante que le garçon a une sorte de transmigration de son âme appelée métempsycose, qui sont des dualismes extrêmes, l'âme change de corps après la mort.
Il conclut ainsi que Charlie avait bien été en d'autres temps, une sorte de galère grecque (homme qui pagayait de manière forcée sur les galères). Il est prévisible l'extase que subit l'écrivain devant cette grande opportunité qu'il a devant lui de pouvoir écrire des histoires en temps réel, de choses qui se sont passées il y a des milliers d'années...
Biographie:
Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) était un écrivain et poète britannique, auteur de grandes histoires, de contes pour enfants, de romans et de poésie, tels que The Jungle The Book (The Book of the Virgin Lands, 1894), le roman d'espionnage Kim (1901), le court histoire "L'homme qui voulait être roi" ("L'homme qui pourrait être roi", 1888), dont beaucoup ont été emmenés au cinéma.
Il a rejeté plusieurs prix à l'époque, mais en 1907, il a accepté et a reçu le prix Nobel de littérature, ce qui fait de lui le premier écrivain britannique à recevoir ce prix, et le plus jeune lauréat du prix Nobel de littérature à ce jour.
