Durante mis años de trabajo como counsellor y psicoterapeuta, y gracias a mi formación académica como pedagoga, se hizo muy evidente la poca educación emocional que generalmente reciben los niños, que, en mi opinión, es uno de los factores importantes responsables de nuestro sufrimiento como adultos. . Este sufrimiento se hereda de generación en generación junto con mecanismos de afrontamiento desadaptativos para lidiar con problemas y emociones.

Esto ha estado muy presente para mí durante mucho tiempo y puedo decir con confianza que lo veo en la mayoría de los clientes que pasan por las puertas de mi consulta. La forma más común de afrontar los problemas y las emociones desagradables es la evitación. Evitamos, descartamos, guardamos debajo de la alfombra, negamos y descuidamos nuestra salud mental y, de repente, pasa factura y se vuelve demasiado pesado, se vuelve inmanejable y no sabemos qué hacer. Ya no podemos evitarlo mas porque evitar se vuelve inútil y nos perdemos, solo sabemos que queremos arreglarlo y tiene que ser ya!, no queremos mirar a lo que está pasando, y a menudo vamos a terapia buscando soluciones rápidas. tiritas para poner en nuestras heridas.

Trabajo mucho con metáforas, soy una persona visual y me encantan las historias, un día se me ocurrió una metáfora, llamada el montón de mierda (sí, uso malas palabras en mi práctica a veces, especialmente si sé que mis clientes se relacionarán mejor con eso, y porque a veces no hay una palabra mejor para describir algo).

Usé mucho esta metáfora en mi trabajo con adultos. Básicamente significa explicar que los problemas se pueden acumular con bastante facilidad si los evitamos o no cuidamos nuestra salud mental y que para procesar nuestros problemas la única manera es sentarse en ellos, enfrentarlos, mirarlos, explorarlos, al sentirse incómodo, básicamente, la única manera es sentandose en esa pila de basura, siempre hay un límite en cuanto a lo mucho que podemos evitar un problema o una emoción desagradable.

Entonces, comencé a pensar cómo podrían beneficiarse más personas de esta metáfora, ¿cómo podría compartir este mensaje para que llegue a más personas y no solo a mis clientes? ¿Y si también lo compartimos con los más pequeños? ¿Pueden convertirse en adultos que manejen mejor las emociones y las dificultades de la vida? ¿Existe alguna manera de alentar o facilitar conversaciones tempranas y saludables sobre la salud mental y las emociones entre padres e hijos?
