Tema centrale della Philosophy for Children è l'interesse, la cura, il caring thinking, basato sull'assunto che l'emozione sia alla base della scelta, della decisione e del giudizio.Lipman parte dal concetto di high order thinking, pensiero di alto livello, grazie al quale è possibile esplorare le diverse dimensioni dell'esperienza umana e riflettervi. Distingue, poi, tra pensiero critico e pensiero creativo.Il pensiero critico è autocorrettivo e consente di formulare giudizi e di compiere una serie di atti cognitivi, quali: -classificare, -elaborare e formulare assunti, -fare inferenze, -stimare, -valutare. Il pensiero "caring" è basato sul riconoscimento che le emozioni sono forme di giudizio, che ci consentono di fare delle scelte e di prendere delle decisioni, in merito a persone e situazioni che, per noi, contano.
