PRÉFACE DU TRADUCTEUR L'ouvrage de Léon Tolstoy, dont nous présentons ici au lecteur européen la première traduction française, a une double portée. Il résume les pensées exprimées par les sages universellement reconnus et par les fondateurs des religions les plus répandues de tous les temps et de tous les pays, pensées sur le sens et le but suprême de la vie. C'est en cherchant à son tour, durant son existence entière, le chemin de la vie, que le grand penseur russe s'est efforcé de mettre à profit ce qui avait été dit et écrit avant lui sur l'éternel problème, pour sa propre éducation, d'abord, pour éclairer les autres, ensuite, par des citations appropriées. Le présent ouvrage est le résultat de ce travail formidable. C'est bien la pensée de l'humanité refléchie par l'âme de Tolstoï. C'est, d'autre part, son oeuvre testamentaire, celle qu'il entoura de plus de soin durant ses dernières années et dont il corrigeait les épreuves jusqu'à sur sa couche de mourant. Il avait déjà précédemment établi plusieurs recueils analogues, sans avoir pu se déclarer satisfait. Ce fut, premièrement: Pensées des sages pour chaque jour; puis: Cercle de lecture, et, enfin: Lectures quotidiennes. Durant dix ans, l'auteur de ces recueils, dont chacun forme plusieurs volumes, ne cessait de les amender, de les coordonner sur un nouveau plan, et c'est de ce long travail préliminaire qu'est sorti enfin Le Chemin de la vie dont nous croyons plus explicitement intituler la version française: La Pensée de l'Humanité. L'idée de laisser avant de mourir la confirmation de sa doctrine par la collectivité de grands penseurs, le hantait avec une telle constance que toutes les fois où Tolstoï croyait sa fin proche, son unique préoccupation était d'en activer la réalisation. L'un de ses disciples et plus proches amis, M. Gorbounov-Possadov, qui avait été chargé par lui de publier les recueils énumérés, raconte, dans sa préface à l'édition russe du Chemin de la vie, ces détails significatifs sur l'origine du premier recueil: Pendant la grave maladie dont L.N. Tolstoï souffrait en janvier 1903, alors que sa vie était en danger et qu'il n'avait plus la force de s'adonner à ses travaux habituels, il relisait l'Evangile et, en détachant chaque jour les feuilles du calendrier suspendu à la tête de son lit, parcourait les maximes empruntées aux grands penseurs que portaient les feuillets. Le calendrier étant épuisé et le malade n'ayant pas sous la main un autre pour le remplacer, Tolstoï éprouva le désir d'établir pour son usage personnel un recueil des pensées pour sa lecture quotidienne. C'est ainsi que, durant sa maladie, il réunit les éléments pour son premier recueil. Rétabli, il ne cessa d'enrichir chaque nouveau recueil du produit de ses constantes recherches, utilisant toute pensée qui avait sa valeur propre
