About the Book

Monotheism meant a break with respect to the religious idea of the afterlife: God is present not as the puppeteer who pulls the strings from above, but as the God who receded beyond creation, even from the heavens. The paradoxical reality of God is that his presence is that of an absent person, that of a God who does not allow himself to be assimilated as god. After all, the biblical God was never comparable to what the religious conscience spontaneously understands by divine. The question of God's truth can be translated as the question of true power: in whose hands we are. The believer addresses a God who is not yet without the delivery of man. It does not demand worship, but a response to the weakest. Only from our own nakedness or helplessness can we respond to the infinite demand of those who were stripped naked by a world without mercy. Hence the paradox: those capable of God are not those who believe they have the support of divinity, but those who do not seem to count even for God.
