About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A grand novel of adventure, love, and sensuality in Japan.
Winner of the Lectores L'Express-BFM TV Prize, by the Goncourt Prize winner and member of the Goncourt Academy.

In Japan of the year 1000, a 15-year-old emperor reigns in a self-absorbed world full of rituals. Each year, Katsuro, a humble fisherman from the distant village of Shimae, brings to the Court the twenty most extraordinary carp to populate the sumptuous imperial ponds. It is a vitally important mission that allows the entire village to enjoy privileged treatment. But this year, Katsuro cannot complete his mission: he has drowned in the Kusagawa River.

The village, fearful for its future, sends the fisherman's widow to make the final delivery. Wearing straw sandals and carrying two immense baskets, Miyuki sets out on the long journey to the imperial city: a voyage through difficult terrain in which she must face storms, thugs, threats, and superstitions. Only the memory of happy days and sultry nights with Katsuro can give her the strength to overcome the path's difficulties and make her delivery to the master supplier of the Office of Gardens and Ponds.
