La Navidad de un niño en Gales es uno de los escritos mas líricos y evocadores de la producción poética de Dylan Thomas, está repleto de reminiscencias de la infancia, de recuerdos de la memoria de las navidades de otras épocas, en un lenguaje poético original y riquísimo, casi a modo de poema en prosa o casi cuento que por su lirismo extremo resulta prosa poética. En una especie de recuerdos de la infancia, el autor nos evoca los paisajes nevados, los vientos de los arrecifes, las colinas de Gales, los regalos de la navidad, los barcos y los sueños de invierno cual reminiscente cajita de música que de repente nos transportara a nuestra infancia, a los recuerdos de las navidades casi olvidadas en la memoria. Dylan Thomas, del que en Octubre este año de 2014 se cumple el centenario de su nacimiento, moriría con apenas 39 años, en New York casi un año después de esta creacion de esta mavavillosa obra que presentamos en traducción al castellano por Ángel Recas. En 1954 sería publicada en su primera edición y desde entonces se convertiría en un éxito editorial recurrente y muy valorado, sobretodo en el mundo anglosajón. Como en la mayoría de su poesía, La Navidad de un niño en Gales, no se ajusta a una estructura narrativa fija, sino que contiene pasajes descriptivos líricos diseñados para crear un estado de continuo sentimiento emocional de nostalgia. La historia está narrada desde el punto de vista del autor rememorando una navidad de un niño en su Gales natal de manera y en evidente estilo autobiográfico. Ya desde el principio nos evoca los espacios y los lugares de su pueblo natal, de su amadísima Gales, Nevaba, siempre nevaba en Navidad... El mundo de las navidades del pasado de las que Dylan Thomas evoca está muy lejano del actual, lejos de los ruidos descontrolados, de las prisas, lejos del frio mundo de los ordenadores y de los advances tecnológicos y de la desgarradora e inhumana sociedad de consumo de nuestros días. Entonces todo sucedía con más naturalidad, con más ingenuidad y con la pureza de los sentimientos de que todo, principalmente desde el punto de un niño, es nuevo. Y ese asombro maravilloso ante lo que nos rodea, como diría el gran Facundo Cabral, nos condena benditamente al descubrimiento gozoso de lo que alrededor acontecía; sentimientos idénticos ante cualquier celebración navideña de ahora y como desde siempre, las familias que se reúnen, las vueltas y viajes a casa desde lejos, los intercambios de regalos, las comidas, las canciones y los villancicos, las reuniones en las que todos juntos siempre se come y se bebe, y se canta felizmente junto al calor de la chimenea, mientras que los niños contemplan todo eso con su inocente mirada, con la sorpresa continua ante lo que siempre cada día acontecía siempre en Navidad, pensando en escapar a la mínima a la calle para jugar con la nieve, con los amigos, y divertirse gastando ingénuas bromas navideñas a los vecinos y acabar fantaseando con enormes hipopótamos. La emoción lírica, con la que Dylan Thomas recuerda, con nostalgia cualquier pasado infantil, los años felices de las navidades pasadas, cargadas de maravillosas y entrañables vivencias que se vuelven determinantes en la formación de cualquier niño, es una de las características estilísticas más conmovedoras de este encantador relato que presentamos aquí cuando se cumple en este año 2014 el primer centenario del nacimiento de Dylan Thomas.
