En publiant cet opuscule je me suis proposé d'abord de mettre en lumière, aux yeux des occidentaux, une philosophie trop peu connue, parce que ses éléments sont épars dans des livres d'une lecture difficile, même à l'aide des meilleures traductions. Les extraits de cette philosophie que je mets sous les yeux du lecteur français, sont tirés des livres classiques les plus élémentaires; ils sont gravés dans la mémoire de tous les étudiants de la Chine et de l'Annam; ils ornent, en caractères d'or sur des tablettes de laque, les pagodes élevées aux génies et les maisons des lettrés. Cette philosophie révèle la tournure d'esprit des peuples asiatiques, au même titre que le catéchisme et les évangiles décèlent le génie des peuples chez lesquels le catholicisme domine. Chinois et Annamites sont aussi imprégnés de la doctrine de Confucius et de Mencius que les Français de celle de Jésus. Toutes les deux ont cela de commun qu'elles se bornent à peu près exclusivement à la partie morale de la philosophie. Toutefois, les philosophes de la Chine et de l'Annam se distinguent de la plupart de ceux des autres nations par l'absence à peu près absolue de toute préoccupation métaphysique. Les questions du libre arbitre, de l'âme, de la divinité et de la vie future ne paraissent pas tenir la moindre place dans leurs méditations. Leur royaume est de ce monde, leur morale s'adresse à des hommes dont toute l'existence doit s'écouler sur cette terre et qui, par suite, devront y trouver la récompense de leurs vertus, comme le châtiment de leurs mauvaises actions.
About the Author: Jean-Marie Antoine Louis de Lanessan ou Jean-Louis de Lanessan de son nom de plume, né à Saint-André-de-Cubzac (Gironde) le 13 juillet 1843 et mort à Écouen (Val-d'Oise) le 7 novembre 1919, est un naturaliste, médecin et homme politique français. Il fut professeur à la faculté des sciences de Paris, député radical (1881-1891; 1898-1906), gouverneur général de l'Indochine française (1891-1894), ministre de la Marine dans le cabinet Waldeck-Rousseau (1899-1902).
