About the Book

Jean Antoine René Édouard Corbière, né à Brest (Finistère) le 1er avril 1793 et mort à Morlaix (Finistère) le 27 septembre 1875, est un marin, armateur, journaliste et écrivain français, considéré comme le père du roman maritime en France. Biographie Les années de formation La famille Corbière est originaire du Haut-Languedoc (le hameau de Valès, aujourd'hui sur la commune du Bez, à l'est de Castres, dans le Tarn). À la naissance d'Édouard, son père est capitaine d'infanterie de Marine. Sa mère, Jeanne-Renée Dubois, est née à Morlaix en 1768. Édouard est le troisième de quatre enfants. Orphelin de père en 1802, le jeune Édouard n'a alors d'autre choix que d'entrer dans la Marine pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille. Mousse en 1804, novice en 1806, aspirant dès 1807, Édouard Corbière connaît la dure expérience d'un ponton britannique, celui de Tiverton (Devon) en 1811-1812. Il est écarté de la Marine à la Restauration en raison de ses opinions libérales. Extrait: I.-Le Plongeon. De tous les actes produits par la raison humaine, la navigation est, sans contredit, le plus difficile, et celui qui a exigé le plus d'audace. La nature a mis chaque être au milieu de ses rapports nécessaires; elle lui a affecté une place qu'il ne peut changer, elle lui a donné des organes propres aux éléments qu'il habite, et dont la disposition sert à l'exercice de certaines inclinations innées; aussi, ne voit-on jamais les animaux contrarier ses vues. Chez eux, l'individu respecte toute sa vie les lois qui gouvernent l'espèce entière. L'homme seul, qui fonde toute sa prééminence sur une faculté pour ainsi dire artificielle, l'homme, qui a tout tiré de son industrie pour assurer son empire sur la terre, a eu besoin d'une industrie plus puissante encore quand il a voulu établir sa domination sur un élément auquel la nature ne l'avait point destiné. Sur la terre, en effet, son industrie a pu le mettre aux prises avec quelques dangers; mais, sur la mer, il a eu à lutter contre tous. La terre était son domaine, et il n'a eu, pour l'assujettir, qu'à obéir à une inclination naturelle; ici, au contraire, il a fallu que cette inclination cédât à une volonté qui la contrariait. Sans doute, le caractère de la raison est non-seulement de tirer parti de tout, mais encore d'abuser de tout. L'art de la navigation mérite les mêmes blâmes que tous les autres. En étendant l'empire de l'homme sur un élément qui ne lui avait pas été donné, il a fait servir cet élément de théâtre à nos fureurs, et il n'est pas aujourd'hui un rivage si ignoré qu'il fut jadis, qui n'ait été souillé du sang des hommes. Ainsi, si ce n'est pas, rigoureusement parlant, le plus utile des arts, c'est toujours le plus sublime de tous....
