Sur le chemin de mousses et de feuilles qui allait de l'Ermitage à Versailles, - des humbles chaumières au majestueux colosse de pierre, - un cavalier s'en venait au petit pas, rênes flottantes au caprice de son alezan nerveux et souple. Le chapeau crânement posé de côté sur le catogan, la fine rapière aux flancs de sa bête, svelte, élégant, tout jeune, vingt ans à peine, la figure empreinte d'une insouciante audace, la lèvre malicieuse et l'oeil ardent, il souriait au soleil qui, par delà les frondaisons empourprées, descendait vers des horizons d'azur soyeux; il souriait à la belle forêt vêtue de son automnale magnificence; il souriait à la fille qui passait, accorte, au paysan qui fredonnait; il se souriait à lui-même, à la vie, à ses rêves... Devant lui, à un millier de pas, cheminait un piéton, son bâton d'épine à la main. L'homme était poudreux, déchiré. Il marchait depuis le matin, venant on ne sait d'où - de très loin, sans doute - allant peut-être vers de redoutables destinées... Près de l'étang, le piéton s'arrêta soudain... C'était, sous ses yeux, dans le rayonnement de la clairière, dans le prestigieux décor de ce coin de forêt, une vision de charme et de grâce: Une jeune fille... une exquise merveille... Michel Zévaco, né à Ajaccio le 1er février 1860 et mort à Eaubonne (Seine-et-Oise) le 8 août 1918, est un journaliste anarchiste et écrivain français, auteur de romans populaires, notamment de la série de cape et d'épée Les Pardaillan. C'est l'oncle du peintre Xavier Zevaco. 1886-1900: le journaliste engagé Attiré par les lettres et la politique, Michel Zévaco devient journaliste, puis secrétaire de rédaction à L'Egalité que dirige alors le socialiste révolutionnaire Jules Roques. Il se présente sans succès aux élections législatives de 1889 pour la Ligue socialiste de Roques. À cette époque, il rencontre Louise Michel, Aristide Bruant, Séverine, Sébastien Faure, Émile Pouget, Charles Malato, Emmanuel Chauvière, etc. En raison de la virulence de ses propos, en pleine période d'attentats anarchistes, Michel Zévaco est condamné à plusieurs séjours à la prison Sainte-Pélagie. Par exemple, en 1890, il est arrêté en avril pour provocation au meurtre en raison d'un éditorial visant le ministre de l'Intérieur Ernest Constans, et condamné à quatre mois de prison. Libéré fin août, il est à nouveau arrêté, toujours pour provocation au meurtre, à la suite d'un éditorial de L'Égalité où il incitait les soldats à faire justice eux-mêmes auprès de leurs officiers. Il est également condamné le 6 octobre 1892 par la cour d'assise de la Seine pour avoir déclaré dans une réunion publique à Paris: Les bourgeois nous tuent par la faim; volons, tuons, dynamitons, tous les moyens sont bons pour nous débarrasser de cette pourriture. Durant ses séjours en prison, il se liera d'amitié avec le marquis de Morès, dont il partagera rapidement les opinions antisémites. Pourtant, en 1898, lors de l'affaire Dreyfus, alors que Bernard Lazare remet en cause la culpabilité du condamné, Zévaco s'engage dans la cause dreyfusarde, dénonçant dans l'une de ses dernières publications politiques le complot des jésuites contre Dreyfus et les juifs.
