George Sand, de son vrai nom Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin ou baronne Dudevant, est née en 1804 et décédée en 1876, est une auteure française, romancière, dramaturge, critique littéraire et journaliste. Elle a à son actif plus de 70 romans et 50 divers travaux (nouvelles, contes, pièces de théâtre et textes politiques). George Sand s'est engagée dans la défense des femmes et contre l'institution du mariage. Elle était aussi engagé dans la politique et au lancement de plusieurs journaux. Elle a tenté de plaider la cause de certains justiciables et particulièrement celle de Victor Hugo auprès de Napoléon III. Victor Hugo s'était même exilé hors de France sous le règne de Napoléon III, ils étaient en froid après avoir été des alliés. Elle a eu une vie amoureuse agitée. Elle s'habillait en tenue vestimentaire masculine et a adopté un pseudonyme masculin dès 1829. Elle était impliqué dans la vie intellectuelle de son époque, accueillant Honoré de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Eugène Delacroix, Victor Hugo et d'autres. Elle a aussi défendu dans ses romans les questions sociales, celles des ouvriers, des pauvres et des paysans. Elle a écrit des romans champêtres idéalisés comme La Mare au diable (1846), François le champi (1848), La Petite Fadette (1849) et Les Maîtres sonneurs (1853). George Sand a travaillé sur son autobiographie (Histoire de ma vie, 1855) et le roman historique Consuelo (1843), retraçant la figure d'une cantatrice italienne. Elle a aussi abordé le paysage artistique européen du 18e siècle dans Beaux Messieurs de bois-Doré (1858), ayant un contenu plein des péripéties amoureuses et aventureuses La Mare au diable, publié en 1846, est un roman de George Sand. Ce roman décrit une intrigue amoureuse et idéalisée dans la société paysanne du Berry. Cet amour a aboutis à un mariage coutumier. La Mare au diable a eu un grand succès. Ce livre a été adapté au théâtre, au cinéma et à la télévision. La Mare au diable décrit le mariage de Germain et retrace les traditions ancestrales. Il se compose de trois parties. Ce roman a été dédicacé par l'auteure à son amant du moment, Frédéric Chopin. George Sand décrit la vie paysanne. La mort d'Hans Holbein, étant jeune, relève de la danse macabre. Elle décrit aussi un laboureur dans son champ, courbé sur sa charrue, guetté par la Mort. L'auteure présente la vie des paysans comme une suite de souffrances sans espoir. Elle explique la tristesse et l'insatisfaction devant les difficultés de la vie paysanne, sans pour autant renier une modeste possibilité d'un avenir meilleur. Dans le récit du roman, Germain, veuf à 28 ans, se met en route pour aller au village voisin. Il se perd dans la forêt et se retrouve obliger de passer la nuit à l'endroit désigné la Mare au diable, en compagnie de son fils, le petit Pierre, et une jeune bergère de 16 ans, Marie. Durant leurs repos, celle-ci ayant refusé de flirter avec lui au vu de leur différence d'âge. Le lendemain, il confie son fils à la bergère et reprend son voyage pour le village voisin, dans l'espoir de trouver une épouse, sans succès. Au retour, par son fils, il apprend que la bergère était partie. Marie avait précipité son départ par son souhait de fuir un fermier, et éviter ainsi ses avances. Plus tard, au village, Germain, encouragé par sa belle-mère, avoue son amour à Marie. Leur mariage a été l'occasion de passer en revue les différentes coutumes paysannes dans le Berry de l'époque. Le roman fait une description du romantisme en lien avec la nature et le fantastique.
