La novela, La madre nos cuenta, como una madre con su actitud revolucionaria, sus ganas de vivir y de conseguir la plena libertad, lucha influenciada por su hijo Pavel para conseguir el respeto por parte del gobierno hacia la sociedad. Pelagia era su nombre, vivía con su marido y su hijo, en una pequeña casa de alquiler, recibía por parte de su marido tremendas palizas cuando él llegaba borracho, su vida era difícil como la de todas las familias, su marido entro en una terrible enfermedad y murió a los pocos días. Pavel que no era muy agradecido con su madre tras la muerte de su padre se pone a trabajar en una fábrica, donde empieza a darse cuenta de la injusticia por parte del estado, con las subidas de impuestos y el salario mínimo que recibían, entonces empezó a ir a la ciudad a leer libros y a investigar acerca de sus derechos. Pelagia se contagio y emprendieron una acción en protesta por las condiciones de vida que llevaba la sociedad rusa, primero tirando folletos reivindicando sus derechos y después llegarían hasta tirarlos por toda la ciudad. Pavel fue detenido y metido en la cárcel por estas acciones pero sus amigos y su madre le seguían apoyándole realizando su trabajo, mostrar la verdad a todos los ciudadanos y protestar. Debido a que los folletos seguían siendo repartidos y Pavel estaba en la cárcel decidieron soltarle, el cual no se acobardaría y seguiría poniendo de manifiesto sus pensamientos, con la ayuda de su madre. Siguieron las revoluciones y las protestas, y tras la muerte de un amigo suyo a cargo de la policía rusa, se llevo acabo una gran manifestación de la cual el portavoz era Pavel que contó a todos los ciudadanos la verdad del pueblo sus derechos, esto le hizo volver a la cárcel en la cual sería juzgado y deportado a Siberia dónde realizaría trabajos forzados. Pelagia quedo destrozada, pero continuaría la tarea de Pavel y en un viaje en tren donde llevaba la maleta llena de folletos, libros y periódicos que incluso llegaron a repartir fue perseguida por unos policías y cuando ella se sintió atrapada esparció todos los folletos, a la gente del tren y les dijo que la verdad esta en estos libros, y que las palabras no se ahogaran en sangre, después fue abofeteada por los guardias y llevada a la cárcel, donde después la deportarían a Siberia con Pavel. Esta es la historia de la luchadora inconfundible por la libertad y sus derechos que al igual que su hijo lo dieron todo por mostrar la verdadera verdad a la sociedad rusa y que consiguieron tapar sus bocas pero nadie conseguirá tapar los libros que seguirán ahí y serán repartidos por otras personas hasta que a la sociedad rusa se les de lo que piden.
