La Lupa La lupa è una novella di Giovanni Verga. Fu inclusa nella raccolta Vita dei campi e pubblicata presso Treves nel 1880. È molto interessante la tipologia del personaggio femminile che Verga dà a "La Lupa": una tipologia femminile molto diversa dagli altri personaggi femminili in altre novelle del Verga. È una donna quasi stregonesca e demoniaca con un'alta voracità sessuale: la protagonista infatti arriva ad adescare un giovanotto, che riesce a convincere a sposare la figlia solo per poterlo avere in casa con sé e poterlo sedurre in ogni momento. Il protagonista, esasperato dalle attenzioni della donna e dalla volontà di essere fedele alla moglie, arriverà a uccidere la donna. Il grande successo spinse Verga a ricavarne un dramma teatrale in un atto, con lo stesso titolo, che fu rappresentato per la prima volta al Teatro Gerbino di Torino il 26 gennaio 1896. Dal dramma verghiano sono stati tratti due film: uno La lupa del 1953 diretto da Alberto Lattuada; un altro del 1996 interpretato da Monica Guerritore, La lupa, per la regia di Gabriele Lavia. Altre opere tratte dalla novella sono: La lupa: (dalla tragedia omonima di G. Verga) / 3 atti di Vincenzo De Simone; per la musica di Santo Santonocito; La lupa: (dalla tragedia omonima di G. Verga) / riduzione in versi di Franco Pastore. La novella di Verga racconta di una donna che veniva chiamata "Lupa" perché non era sazia mai delle relazioni con gli uomini. Descrive molto bene la donna fisicamente occhi neri come il carbone, labbra rosse e carnose, seno vigoroso, alta, pallida e magra. Sua figlia Maricchia era triste per il comportamento della madre e sapeva che nessuno mai l'avrebbe presa in sposa anche se era bella e aveva buona dote. Tutte le donne del paese quando passava si facevano il segno della croce perché avevano paura che potesse portare via da loro i mariti solo con uno sguardo. Un giorno la Lupa si innamorò di Nanni, un ragazzo che era tornato da poco dal servizio militare e che lavorava nei campi. La lupa una sera gli confessò il suo amore ma lui la respinse dicendole che voleva in sposa sua figlia Maricchia. La Lupa se ne andò via con le mani nei capelli e non tornò da lui per due mesi. Ad ottobre la Lupa si presentò con la figlia da Nanni e li fece sposare. Offrì loro la sua casa a patto che le lasciassero un angolino per dormire. La Lupa aveva vicino a sé Nanni e lo importunava sempre. Egli le chiese più volte di non presentarsi al fienile, ma Nanni cedette ed ebbe una relazione con la Lupa. Maricchia lo venne a sapere e litigò con la madre dandole della ladra e le disse che se avesse continuato ad importunarlo sarebbe andata dal brigadiere, e così fece, e il brigadiere disse alla Lupa di lasciare la casa ma lei rifiutò perché la casa era la sua. Un giorno Nanni ricevette una pedata da un asino nel petto e rischiò la vita. Il sacerdote si rifiutò di confessarlo finché la Lupa fosse rimasta lì; solo quando la donna uscì di casa il sacerdote entrò per impartirgli i sacramenti. Se ne andò ma tutto tornò come prima e la Lupa continuava a perseguitarlo fino a che Nanni non minacciò di ucciderla. Un giorno, mentre Nanni zappava la vigna, vide la Lupa arrivare e, stanco della tentazione, prese la scure e si avvicinò ad essa.
