About the Book

L'action se situe en Normandie, dans un petit village portuaire appelé Bonneville. L'héroïne, Pauline Quenu, fille de Lisa Macquart et du charcutier Quenu (voir Le Ventre de Paris), orpheline à l'âge de dix ans, est confiée à des cousins de son père, les Chanteau. M. et Mme Chanteau ainsi que leur fils Lazare se voient confier la fortune de Pauline; ils sont attendris par Pauline et veulent au début ne pas dilapider sa fortune. Après avoir été assez ambitieuse pour son mari, Mme Chanteau l'est beaucoup pour son fils qui, lui, s'intéresse uniquement à la musique, à son grand regret. Les Chanteau se sont associés avec Davoine pour se procurer de l'argent, mais cette association apparaît dès le début comme un échec, mème s'il y a quelquefois une petite amélioration. Pauline est très appréciée par la famille, surtout par Lazare. Mais Pauline fait apparaître un défaut: la jalousie. Alors que la fille d'une amie décédée de Mme Chanteau, Louise, arrive et que l'attention de toute la famille, Lazare compris, se porte sur elle, Pauline a une crise de colère contre Mathieu, le chien, qu'elle frappe avec brutalité. Lazare décide ensuite, sous l'influence de Pauline, d'entamer des études de médecine, mais il quitte alors le domicile. Pauline, malgré de faibles connaissances en médecine - qu'elle va approfondir -, est intéressée par la matière, car elle a une conception très altruiste de la vie et veut donc aider les gens. Pauline se montre très dévouée pour M. Chanteau, souvent sujet à de vives douleurs causées par sa maladie, la goutte. Mme Chanteau lui enseigne les connaissances qui seront attendues d'elle dans la société, notamment le catéchisme. Pauline s'intéresse à la médecine et au corps humain, malgré le fait que Mme Chanteau refuse de lui révéler certaines choses, notamment l'existence de la menstruation. Zola milite ouvertement pour une éducation des jeunes filles qui s'affranchirait des pudibonderies bourgeoises, à travers le personnage de Pauline, qui fait grief à sa tante de ces cachotteries. Zola écrivait d'ailleurs, dans La Tribune, le 29 novembre 1868: La vérité purifie tout comme le feu. Il avait aussi pour but, dans son oeuvre naturaliste, de déceler et dévoiler la vérité; il dit ainsi dans sa Lettre à la jeunesse de 1879 que la vérité n'égare personne .
