About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Upon his ascent to power in December of 2012, Enrique Peña Nieto thrilled even his adversaries.

Exhausted by increasing violence, sluggish economic growth, and a social confrontation that had already dragged out for six years, Mexico received its new leader as the incarnation of a political class that had been given a new opportunity under the assumption that they knew how to do things.

The new President, a young, popular man whose attractiveness to the masses made him seem like a television star, started his administration by charming everyone with a plan for reforms that, along with the Pact for Mexico, captivated even foreign observers, accustomed to the cycle of demagoguery--corruption--stagnation that has characterized the Latin American region for decades, but which seemed ready to change in certain areas. And there was Peña Nieto to prove it. It was "Mexico's moment," according to the cover of a well-known international magazine.

However, the team who "knows how to do things" started to show cracks within months of arriving in office. Very early on there were blocks focused solely on the succession of 2018. Sectors affected by the reforms or indignant toward the rampant corruption presented resistance. Opposition leaders were gaining funds in their support. And the Peña Nieto ship was starting to accuse the waterways of mistreating it when the first public scandals broke, like the "Casa Blanca," or dramas like the disappearance of the young people from Atozinapa in September of 2014.

The book is structured through a series of eye-opening moments, dominated by public crises or by internal schisms in the presidential team. Grouped chronologically and thematically, these snapshots of collapsing power will give readers a profound look at the human and political nature that dominates the dynamic of the Mexican regime, its secrets and palace intrigues.
