El joven Ceferino Sanjurjo, médico y poeta gallego, conoce en el balneario de Marmolejo a una simpática monjita sevillana, la hermana San Sulpicio, de cuya gracia y belleza queda prendado. Sanjurjo interroga con suma discreción a la madre Florentina, superiora de la orden a la que aquélla pertenece, y se entera de que en esa congregación se renuevan los votos cada cuatro años, y a la linda y graciosa novicia le falta sólo un mes para confirmar o no los suyos. El joven médico la galantea con cierta prudencia, pero al darse cuenta de que está enamorado de ella, la corteja abiertamente y le declara su amor, con la esperanza de que le corresponda y no renueve sus votos. Las circunstancias son propicias para que Ceferino Sanjurjo logre sus propósitos. Gloria Bermúdez, nombre mundano de la monjita de 19 años de edad, había tomado los hábitos no por verdadera vocación religiosa, sino por desavenencias con su madre, doña Tula, y a instancias de ésta. Sin embargo, convencida actualmente de que su destino no estaba en la vida conventual, tenía pensado abandonarla. A raíz de ciertos acontecimientos sucedidos en el balneario, la superiora, la hermana San Sulpicio y otra monja deben abandonar el sitio y regresar a Sevilla. El enamorado Sanjurjo las sigue y, a los pocos días, se presenta en aquella ciudad resuelto a impedir que la hermana sea obligada por su familia a hacer nuevos votos, pues está dispuesto a casarse si ella lo acepta por esposo.
About the Author: Armando Palacio Valdés (Entralgo -Laviana-, Asturias, 1853 - Madrid, 1938) fue un escritor y crítico literario, uno de los autores más conocidos del realismo español en el S.XIX.Tras pasar su infancia en Asturias, se estableció en Madrid a partir de 1870. Precoz como estudiante y lector, Palacio formó parte de un grupo literario de autores como Leopoldo Alas Clarín o Tomás Tuero. Se implicó en la elaboración de revistas y ejerció la crítica literaria con notable prestigio. En su obra se distinguen tres etapas. La primera, marcada por su amistad con Clarín y por la adopción de posturas democráticas, incluye sus primeros escritos en periódicos de signo republicano como Rabagás, periódico satírico-político publicado en 1872 junto con Clarín, Tuero y Rubín. Parte de sus colaboraciones en la Revista Europea formaron los libros Los oradores en el Ateneo, Los novelistas españoles (1878) y Nuevo viaje al Parnaso (1879), recopilados posteriormente en el volumen Semblanzas literarias. En 1881 publicó la colección de artículos La literatura de 1881, escrito en colaboración con Clarín. La segunda etapa, durante la que publicó sus mejores obras, se inició con la dedicación a la novela y culminó a mediados de los años noventa. A esta etapa corresponde una serie de novelas que se sitúan dentro del marco de la literatura española de la Restauración, cercana al ideal de frialdad narrativa expuesto por Guy de Maupassant, y en ellas aparecen las características del costumbrismo regionalista decimonónico, en cuanto a técnica, ambiente y personajes: El señorito Octavio (1881), Marta y María (1883), El idilio de un enfermo (1884), José(1885), Riverita (1886), Maximina (1887), El cuarto poder (1888), La hermana San Sulpicio (1889), y sus novelas más polémicas, La espuma (1891), La fe (1892), El maestrante (1893) y El origen del pensamiento (1895). A partir de 1896, año de la publicación de Los majos de Cádiz, se produjo un giro ideológico en su obra hacia posturas más conservadoras, centradas en torno a la moral y la espiritualidad cristianas, y desciende también la calidad de sus escritos. De esta última etapa destacan, entre otras obras, La alegría del capitán Ribot (1899), La aldea perdida (1903), Tristán o el pesimismo (1906), Santa Rogelia (1926) y Sinfonía pastoral (1931). Escribió también su autobiografía, La novela de un novelista (1921), que se continúa en Álbum de un viejo, publicada en 1940.
