En 1453, les Turcs prennent Constantinople. Rome n'est pas venue au secours de la seconde capitale de la chretiente: des querelles dogmatiques les ont, depuis des siecles, separees. Apres cette conquete, les armees turques deferlent sur l'Europe. En Europe, c'est la confusion des esprits. On appelle au combat mais on doute de la victoire. On preche que le Turc est le fleau de Dieu envoye sur ses peuples qui se sont detournes de lui: on prophetise la prochaine fin des temps. A Rome, on proclame la croisade. Charles Quint s'affirme comme le rempart de la chretiente. Soliman le Magnifique contemple ses conquetes. Francois Ier se tait, il noue des liens discrets avec Constantinople et tient Rome a distance. Ces trois souverains sont de la meme generation: ils ont a peine plus de vingt ans. En France, ressuscitant la violence des polemistes byzantins et des chroniqueurs des premieres croisades, nait une litterature des clercs qui, sans relache, denonce le Turc, porteur de mort et messager de Mahomet. Mais d'autres voix se font entendre. Celles de quelques lettres qui, contre l'ignorance volontaire, recommandent l'apprentissage des langues orientales. Celles aussi des voyageurs qui ont visite la Turquie dont ils ont admire les monuments, son administration et plus encore la piete de ses habitants sans pour autant ignorer la dangerosite de sa puissance militaire. Dans le seconde moitie du siecle, alors que les grands acteurs ont disparu et que la France est en proie aux discordes sanglantes des guerres de religion, des voix s'elevent pour exprimer la nostalgie d'une forme de gouvernance a la Turque, que d'aucuns disent despotique, tandis que d'autres dressent des plans minutieusement detailles pour mettre fin definitivement a la puissance turque. A travers les multiples ecrits des clercs, des voyageurs et des politiques, l'auteur dresse le portrait d'une France lieu des fructueuses contradictions de la Renaissance. Parmi ses ouvrages consacres aux divers aspects des problemes religieux du XVIe siecle, Claude Postel a notamment publie aux Belles Lettres un Traite des invectives au temps de la Reforme (2004) couronne par l'Academie Francaise et plus recemment Si loin de Rome, chronique d'un renegat (2007), une vie de Bernardino Ochino, Superieur de l'ordre des Capucins, passe a la Reforme.
