L'ordre se perdit dans le fracas de la tempête, et il n'était pas articulé qu'une seconde colonne d'air fondit sur le navire avec la rapidité de la foudre, brisa le perroquet du grand mât, les cacatois du mât de misaine et emporta les toiles qui restaient dehors. Un mousse, cramponné à l'extrémité d'une vergue, où il s'efforçait de fixer la voile avec les rabans de ferlage, fut enlevé par le tourbillon et tomba à la mer. Cet accident passa inaperçu au milieu de l'anxiété générale. Le vaisseau penchait affreusement sur le côté et menaçait de s'engloutir. -A la barre! tonna le porte-voix. Le chef de timonerie y était déjà. -Elle ne gouverne plus, capitaine! s'écria-t-il sourdement. -Bas le grand mât! Cinq minutes après, l'arbre, sapé à sa base, s'abattait avec un horrible craquement. Déjà, le brick se relevait, lorsqu'un autre coup de vent faillit le submerger de nouveau. La position était désespérée. Il n'y avait plus à hésiter. Le commandant le comprit. Assis à son banc de quart, il avait surveillé avec un sang-froid merveilleux les progrès de l'ouragan, et quand il vit qu'il ne lui restait qu'un moyen de sauver son vaisseau, il n'hésita pas à l'employer. -Rasez tout! s'écria-t-il. Puis, le bruit cadencé des haches frappant à coups redoublés le pied des deux derniers mâts se joignit aux mugissements des éléments en furie, et bientôt le navire flotta au gré des flots. Cependant la tempête se calma peu à peu: on renaissait à l'espérance, lorsque, tout à coup, un calier parut sur le pont. -Nous faisons eau! dit-il au capitaine qui se tenait sur le gaillard d'arrière, debout, immobile, les bras croisés sur la poitrine.... Henri-Émile Chevalier, né le 13 septembre 1828 à Châtillon-sur-Seine, mort le 26 août 1879 à Paris, est un homme de lettres français. Ayant porté les armes, Chevalier dut s'exiler à la suite du coup d'État du 2 décembre 1851, et séjourna en cette qualité aux États-Unis, où il a donné des feuilletons dans le Courrier des États-Unis, à Montréal où il a écrit dans des journaux démocratiques et occupé le poste de bibliothécaire de l'Institut Canadien. Pendant son séjour en Amérique, il a publié un grand nombre de romans édités à Montréal et plusieurs ouvrages sur la Géologie américaine. Il a traduit de l'anglais le Foyer canadien, de Knot, publié l'Art de la beauté paru sous le nom de Lola Montez, et donné une nouvelle édition de l'Histoire du Canada, du frère Gabriel Sagard-Théodat. Il a aussi dirigé la Chasse illustrée. Ayant accepté l'amnistie en 1860, il écrivit des nouvelles dans des journaux, comme le Pays et L'Opinion nationale, et des séries de romans sur les Amérindiens. Il a pris place au Conseil municipal de Paris et a fini par un enterrement civil.
