Quand j'arrivai à la gare, le train était déjà bondé de voyageurs et, à la plupart des portières, un homme ou une femme se tenait debout comme pour en éloigner les nouveaux arrivants. Malgré cela, je me haussais vers chaque compartiment dans l'espoir de trouver une place. Il y en avait bien une, là, à côté, mais elle était encombrée par deux grands paniers d'où sortaient des têtes de poules et de canards. Après avoir hésité un bon moment, je me décidai à monter. Je m'excusai de faire déranger les paniers, mais un homme vêtu d'une blouse me dit: Attendez donc, Mademoiselle, je vais les ôter de là, et, pendant que je tenais le panier de fruits qu'il avait sur les genoux, il glissa ses volailles sous la banquette. Les canards n'étaient pas contents et cela s'entendait bien; les poules baissaient la tête d'un air humilié et la femme du paysan leur parlait en les appelant par leur nom.
About the Author: Biographie Marguerite Donquichote naît à Sancoins, dans le Cher, le 7 juillet 1863. À l'âge de trois ans, elle perd sa mère, et son père abandonne ses filles. Marguerite et Madeleine (l'aînée), d'abord confiées à une tante, passent neuf années à l'orphelinat de l'Hôpital général de Bourges. De 1877 à 1881, Marguerite est placée, en tant que bergère d'agneaux et servante de ferme, en Sologne à Sainte-Montaine, près d'Aubigny-sur-Nère. Les deux dernières années de cette période sont marquées par la rencontre d'Henri Dejoulx, avec qui la jeune fille vit un amour payé de retour, mais auquel la famille d'Henri, par peur d'une mésalliance, met un terme. L'orpheline s'établit alors à Paris, où elle vit des années noires en exerçant le métier de couturière. Le chômage la contraint de faire d'autres travaux pénibles, à la Cartoucherie de Vincennes et dans la buanderie de l'Hôpital Laennec. Pendant ces années de misère, en 1883, elle a un enfant qui ne survit pas, et dont l'accouchement pénible lui vaut une stérilité définitive. À la même époque, sa soeur Madeleine lui laisse sa fille Yvonne, que la future romancière élève, en dépit des difficultés financières auxquelles elle est confrontée. C'est précisément cette nièce qui, sans bien sûr en avoir conscience, va favoriser la carrière littéraire de sa mère adoptive: la jeune fille volage, à seize ans, se prostitue, à l'insu de sa tante, dans le quartier des Halles de Paris; or, un jeune homme, qui ignore également le commerce auquel elle s'adonne, s'éprend d'elle. C'est Jules Iehl, alias Michel Yell en littérature, un ami d'André Gide. Quand il prend conscience de la situation, il va voir la tante, avec qui il se console si bien que leur relation ne prendra fin qu'en 1912. Yell fait rencontrer à son amie un groupe d'intellectuels, écrivains et artistes, parmi lesquels figurent Charles-Louis Philippe, Léon-Paul Fargue, Léon Werth etFrancis Jourdain.
