Derrière cette maison, bâtie en pierre brodée comme melon, s'étale le velours vert d'une pelouse anglaise, ombragée au fond par un élégant massif d'arbres exotiques, d'où s'élance un pavillon chinois avec ses clochettes muettes et ses oeufs dorés immobiles. La serre et ses constructions fantastiques déguisent le mur de clôture au midi. L'autre mur qui fait face à la serre est caché par des plantes grimpantes, façonnées en portiques à l'aide de mâts peints en vert et réunis par des traverses. Cette prairie, ce monde de fleurs, ces allées sablées, ce simulacre de forêt, ces palissades aériennes se développent dans vingt-cinq perches carrées, qui valent aujourd'hui quatre cent mille francs, la valeur d'une vraie forêt. Au milieu de ce silence obtenu dans Paris, les oiseaux chantent: il y a des merles, des rossignols, des bouvreuils, des fauvettes, et beaucoup de moineaux. La serre est une immense jardinière où l'air est chargé de parfums, où l'on se promène en hiver comme si l'été brillait de tous ses feux. Les moyens par lesquels on compose une atmosphère à sa guise, la Torride, la Chine ou l'Italie, sont habilement dérobés aux regards. Les tubes où circulent l'eau bouillante, la vapeur, un calorique quelconque, sont enveloppés de terre et se produisent aux regards comme des guirlandes de fleurs vivantes. Vaste est le boudoir. Sur un terrain restreint, le miracle de cette fée parisienne, appelée l'Architecture, est de rendre tout grand. Le boudoir de la jeune comtesse fut la coquetterie de l'artiste, à qui le comte Adam livra l'hôtel à décorer de nouveau. Une faute y est impossible: il y a trop de jolis riens. L'amour ne saurait où se poser parmi des travailleuses sculptées en Chine, où l'oeil aperçoit des milliers de figures bizarres fouillées dans l'ivoire et dont la génération a usé deux familles chinoises; des coupes de topaze brûlée montées sur un pied de filigrane. Le roman est un plaidoyer sur la nécessité d'une fausse aventure (celles, nombreuses, que l'auteur avait) pour cacher au monde son véritable amour (la comtesse). Un peu tarabiscoté dans le style, l'oeuvre n'en offre pas moins le charme, l'ambiance et le mystère de La Fille aux yeux d'or, bien que, cette fois-ci, il s'agisse d'un homme passionnément dévoué à un autre homme, d'une passion désintéressée, qui ne demande aucune contrepartie.
