Redige entre l'automne 1758 et la fin de l'annee 1759, le manuscrit Favre est la version la plus ancienne de l'Emile, uvre philosophique majeure de Rousseau qui paraitra en 1762. L'etude de ce manuscrit composite contribue a mettre en evidence la dynamique d'une pensee qui s'elabore a meme le travail de l'ecriture, pour mieux se mettre au rythme de la nature. Car en suivant les premiers pas de Rousseau sur le chemin de sa reflexion, c'est bien la "marche de la nature" que le lecteur a son tour prend pour guide. Ce volume s'attache a en commenter la mise en place, a restituer les decisions philosophiques fortes qui ont rendu ce parcours possible, et a suivre pas a pas les etapes de son developpement. Tout comme ces commentaires veulent saisir la pensee de Rousseau sur le vif, dans le mouvement par lequel elle prend forme, le manuscrit Favre est habite par la conviction que la genese et le developpement de tout etre naturel sont la cle de son intelligibilite: la theorie de l'homme ne peut etre que son histoire, le traite ne peut prendre que la forme du recit. Rousseau le comprend a mesure qu'il avance dans sa redaction: on y voit se mettre en place progressivement et de maniere solidaire un objet - la marche de la nature en l'homme -, un registre de discours - ou l'analyse philosophique tend vers les formes du recit de fiction et a terme du roman -, un personnage - Emile, dont l'irruption requalifie en profondeur le statut des enonces pedagogiques -, enfin des scansions, delimitant autant de domaines pour la formation d'un homme accompli. C'est ainsi que la philosophie de la nature la plus aboutie du XVIIIe siecle en est venue a s'y deployer, par coincidence et non par juxtaposition, comme sa philosophie de la culture la plus ambitieuse.
