About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A special edition with an epilogue by the author regarding the 25 years that have passed since the first publication of this novel that was awarded the Tigre Juan Prize, and which is much more than a crazy love story.

If platonic love says yes... If one day, at a bus stop, a man who fantasizes about meeting the person he was in love with who never reciprocated meets her, if she takes his arm, looks excited, laughs... then what can be done with reality?

Sergio Prim, a geographer by trade, has seen how his dream of loving Brezo Varela is coming true, and he has panicked. Throughout the novel he searches for an opening, a point of stillness, an area free of worries. Maybe there he can overcome his difficulty understanding other people's scale--that is, the way others establish relationships of similarity, distance, or nearness--maybe then he can save his relationship with Brezo.

The Scale of Maps is the story of the fear of being loved and its metaphor, but it is also a reflection about the difference between the things that happen in space and those others that happen in time. Written in refreshing language, and originating at a time in which the Internet was just a budding project, Belén Gopegui's first novel takes on the idea of literature as a knife that is capable of leaving a rift in the air and in our perception of the world.
