Fue su última novela publicada en vida, considerada una de las más influyentes del siglo XIX. Fue alabada por contemporáneos como George Sand, Émile Zola y Henry James.La historia se centra en la vida romántica de un joven en la época de la Revolución Francesa de 1848.La novela describe la vida de un joven (Frédéric Moreau) que vivió la revolución de 1848 y la fundación del Segundo Imperio Francés, y su amor por una mujer mayor (basada en la esposa del editor de música Maurice Schlesinger, quien es interpretada en el libro como Jacques Arnoux). Flaubert basó muchas de las experiencias del protagonista (incluida la pasión romántica) en su propia vida. Escribió sobre la obra en 1864: "Quiero escribir la historia moral de los hombres de mi generación o, más exactamente, la historia de sus sentimientos. Sus obras más conocidas son Teoría del Arte e Historia de las Bellas Artes en la antigüedad, Principios de Literatura y Manual de Estética, orientadas a la enseñanza, y contribuyó poderosamente a la fundamentación científica de esta disciplina.Tradujo las obras de Hegel Estética y Lecciones sobre la estética, las de Wilhelm Tiberghien La enseñanza obligatoria, Moral elemental para uso de las escuelas y Krause y Spencer y la de Gustave Flaubert La educación sentimental. Seguidor de Krause, publicó en 1874 Lecciones sumarias de Psicología, el más importante de los trabajos sobre sicología escritos en castellano en el siglo XIX.
