Benito Juárez, aeropuerto de México D.F., un mundo de idas y venidas, de pasiones mexicanas y de temblor de esperas. De improviso me invade un súbito temor. Todas las reconvenciones y advertencias, de las que vengo sobradamente cumplido, hallan justificación, ante la heterogénea multitud, apenas contenida, de la muchedumbre expectante. Dudo un momento, en decidirme a cruzar la línea de salida. Lo hago, tratando de descubrir a Susana. No lo consigo. Venciendo la timidez que impone ser contemplado por tantas personas desconocidas, doy una descarada vuelta a lo largo del amplio semicírculo que forman las gentes. Las gafas me resbalan; sudo. Apenas si distingo las figuras. Rostros expectantes, miradas de espera, miradas de amor contenido o de emoción sin reservas; miradas las más, que me confunden. Un hombre de bigote generoso y sonrisa abierta llega hasta mí - Taxi, señor - me dice. - No, gracias. Vienen a recogerme - respondo. Sin embargo, Susana no llega, ni llegará. Una imprevista manifestación de protesta sindical, que corta el tráfico al aeropuerto, se lo va a impedir. Pero eso no lo sabré hasta tres horas después, acomodado ya en el Hotel Flamingos Plaza. México D.F., es para mí el tópico de su gente, las rancheras, sus pirámides aztecas, la arquitectura colonial, sus satélites de telecomunicaciones; y, sobre todo, la Virgen de Guadalupe. Quiero beber de la magia de los ojos de la Virgen Morenita: descubrir al indio Juan Diego en el fondo de su mirada; dejarme bañar por la luz de su manto y enredarme, henchido de amor, en el dulce sosiego de la protección divina. Es este el viaje de mi vida, presuroso y con fecha de caducidad, pero no por ello con menor anhelo y gozo de futuro. María, la Virgen Guadalupana, hace cosquillas en mi alma. La tengo en mí y quiero mirarla de frente, comérmela a besos y dejarme, al tiempo, seducir por este intenso amor que me quema los adentros. Apenas llega Susana al hotel, lo primero que le pido, dada la profunda amistad que nos une, es que me lleve a La Basílica de la Virgen de Guadalupe: - Quiero darle un beso a La Morenita. En todo el viaje no he hecho sino pensar en ello - le digo con vehemencia y emoción contenida. Susana se sonríe: - Chico, México D.F. no es Madrid. En esta ciudad circulan diariamente más de ciento veinte mil taxis, y unos cuatro millones de vehículos. La noche encierra peligros, y las distancias para ir de uno a otro lugar, se miden por horas. Además, a estas horas, La Basílica de Guadalupe se encuentra cerrada. Finales de marzo de mil novecientos noventa y nueve. Llego a México, D.F. por razones profesionales, pero también a descubrirme por dentro. Sé que la Virgen me va a ayudar, de una vez por todas, a hallar el camino de mi vida. Ese camino, iniciado hace más de cuarenta y siete años, del que aún no he conseguido dibujar siquiera un mapa a mano. En el fondo de mi ser, tan sólo pretendo hallar la senda que la mirada externa no percibe, y que preciso descubrir de una vez por todas, para no confundirme ni confundir, y para intentar salir, ya sea a tientas, de esta cueva que me oculta a la luz del día. Bien es cierto que desde niño la bella madre me acompaña y me colma de amor. Ese amor que experimento en todo cuanto me rodea. Puedo apreciar el temblor de un sentimiento, dejarme llevar del dulce cascabeleo de una sonrisa. A veces, sin embargo, me cuesta quererme. Me cuesta ser sincero conmigo mismo. ¿No es absurdo ser enemigo de sí mismo o engañarse uno a sí mismo? ¿Cómo si no, justificar el absurdo de un dolor autoinfligido, por causas que no tienen otra razón sino temor a lo desconocido?
