Cet ouvrage est la réponse à de multiples interpel-lations auxquelles, du fait de ma profession de biologiste moléculaire, de manipulateur de gènes, je fais face de la part de ma communauté d'origine ethnique, l'Afrique subsaharienne, communément appelée l'Afrique 'noire'. Ces interpellations traduisent toutes une inquiétude per-sistante face au terme génétique, comme si le mot véhi-cule une fatalité intimidante, une sorte de terrible secret qu'il était vital de ne pas révéler de peur qu'il n'explique et ne justifie la précarité historique et actuelle des peuples du continent. Le souci s'insère dans la mythologie contemporaine de la science, comme référence et autorité ultime en ce qui concerne la vérité objective. Cette mythologie infiltre le discours et le théâtre. Le mot ADN est devenu la clé à la voûte ultrasecrète où se garde le secret de l'être, de ses origines, de son avenir, de son état et de son devenir. Les scientifiques qui ont le droit de pénétrer dans ce sanctuaire en ressortent avec des révélations qui définissent le destin de chaque être humain, depuis sa naissance, dans son développement, sa santé, ses risques de maladies, sa longévité. Les gènes sont devenus les oracles des temps modernes, que l'on consulte, que l'on écoute et en qui l'on croit aveuglément, aux dictats des-quels l'on s'enthousiasme ou l'on se résigne. Cet ouvrage est un effort de déconstruction du mythe, une tentative de replacer la génétique dans un contexte plus large d'interprétations du destin biologique. La génétique est quelque chose, mais elle n'est pas tout. Elle explique certaines choses, mais ses explications restent partielles et souvent provisoires. Mais le point le plus important de ma dissertation, est que, par sa nature et dans ses mécanismes, la génétique s'interdit la fixité et la rigidité, au point qu'il est totalement farfelu et foncièrement malvenu de tenter d'en dériver des postulats sociologiques ou philosophiques pour échelonner les individus ou les groupes d'individus selon leurs différences.
About the Author: MAJAMBU MBIKAY, Pharmacien (Université Lovanium, Kinshasa, 1971), PhD (State University of New York, Buffalo, 1979), a été professeur de biochimie et de biologie moléculaire à l'Université d'Ottawa ainsi que chercheur biomédical à l'Institut de recherches de l'Hôpital d'Ottawa et à l'Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal. Avant sa retraite, le thème central de sa longue carrière scientifique a été la manière dont la Nature augmente ses capacités en créant une variété de molécules par fragmentation des protéines, au stade dernier dans le flux de l'information génétique. Sa recherche récente a porté sur la génétique de la susceptibilité et de la résistance aux maladies chroniques et infectieuses. Professeur Mbikay est né et a été élevé en République Démocratique du Congo.
