Ricchi feudatari, astuti preti, corsari e santi predicatori incrociano le loro storie, si incontrano e si scontrano in questo romanzo storico ambientato nell'anfiteatro delle Murge del '500. Il Marchese di Laterza odia, ricambiato, il Conte di Matera e ne derivano scontri dapprima nelle aule di tribunale per poi approdare a vere battaglie sui terreni rocciosi della Murgia. Ma i due personaggi incrociano le loro armi nel periodo sbagliato; infatti il temibile corsaro ottomano Alì Dragut, supportato dai finanziamenti di Solimano il Magnifico, Sultano dell'Impero Ottomano, attacca in forze Taranto e le zone vicine per farne una base saracena nel mezzogiorno d'Italia. La fortezza dello Jonio avrebbe rappresentato il punto di partenza ideale per accrescere la potenza del Gran Solimano in occidente. Si inseriscono in questa vicenda altri personaggi chiave come il Capitano Diego Flores, inviato dal Viceré di Napoli per indagare sul Marchese di Laterza, sospettato di cospirazione contro l'Imperatore a causa della delazione del Conte suo rivale; si crea uno spazio di rilievo anche la bellissima Lucrezia di Taranto, prostituta assoldata da un astuto prete per convincere il Capitano a parteggiare per il Conte di Matera. Il Capitano Flores divide il suo cuore tra la bella ed innocente Luisella, figlia del Marchese in cerca del gran romanticismo dell'Amor cortese e la travolgente Lucrezia che invece gli fa perdere la testa con la sua antica ed irresistibile arte fisica. L'amore non ha regole né metodi e presto lo scoprirà anche il bel soldato che sulle tracce di spietati assassini ed infami congiure dovrà faticare molto per mantenere la lucidità del pensiero. Infine ecco il grande assalto ottomano con il quale irrompono nella storia dei forti e sprezzanti personaggi come Dragut, Botros ed Azhar, corsari in cerca di ricchezze e gloria che vedono in Taranto, Matera e nei territori vicini una rapida quanto allettante possibilità per arricchirsi. Riusciranno gli ottomani ad entrare nelle città di Matera e di Taranto? Ebbene queste imprese saranno ostacolate in maniera decisa da due grandi uomini di fede: il Gran Maresciallo dell'Ordine Cavalleresco del Cristo che da anni raduna nobili ed arruola monaci guerrieri per la causa di Cristo, e dal Beato Maffeo, un sant'uomo dal passato ignoto che in cerca di nascondimento e penitenza viene chiamato da Dio a dare piena testimonianza di una vera vita evangelica. Chi dei due, infine, riuscirà nell'intento di scacciare gli ottomani dai territori cristiani, l'uomo di spada o l'uomo di preghiera?
