Musset rend compte, à partir d'un cas individuel qui est celui de son personnage, du malaise de toute une génération. D'où le titre du roman (La confession d'un enfant du siècle, c'est-à-dire la confession d'un enfant qui a quelque part été le "produit" de son siècle). On retrouve un croisement entre la trajectoire individuelle et la trajectoire historique. En effet, le malaise dont souffre le héros n'est pas un simple malaise individuel mais il est le produit du "Mal du siècle" qui hante la génération romantique. Il y a fort à parier que le "Mal du siècle" ait beaucoup à voir avec l'avènement du nihilisme. Après la chute de l'Ancien Régime, l'épopée napoléonienne avait fourni un idéal et une exaltation au peuple français. Les guerres napoléoniennes étaient terribles mais elles étaient tout de même célébrées car elles suscitaient de l'enthousiasme ( jamais il n'y eut un tel silence autour de ceux qui parlaient de mort Et pourtant jamais il n'y eut tant de joie, tant de vie, tant de fanfares guerrières dans tous les coeurs. Jamais il n'y eut de soleils si purs que ceux qui séchèrent tout ce sang. On disait que Dieu les faisait pour cet homme, et on les appelait ses soleils d'Austerlitz. Mais il les faisait bien lui-même avec ses canons toujours tonnants, et qui ne laissaient de nuages qu'aux lendemains de ses batailles. Partie 1, chapitre 2). Cependant, après la chute de Napoléon, la France bascula dans un état de léthargie et de décrépitude insupportable. La chute de Napoléon balaya la fièvre patriotique et la jeunesse alors privée d'idéal tomba dans un désespoir sans fond. Le rétablissement de la monarchie avec le retour au pouvoir de Louis XVIII, puis l'accession au trône de Charles X, marque le retour à un ordre ancien, que la plupart se contente d'endurer sans pour autant s'en satisfaire. Le "mal du siècle" se comprend comme une période de nihilisme où le monde ancien est en train de mourir et où le monde nouveau n'est pas encore advenu. Ce malaise qui est celui d'une génération s'incarne dans le héros du roman, qui, idéaliste au départ, subit un doute existentiel à l'occasion d'une désillusion amoureuse. Ayant perdu tout espoir, le héros se laisse aller à une vie de débauche.Cet édition comprend une autobiographie de l'auteur.
