La mano de Dios prote ge visiblemente la Iglesia, y como que se complace en com pensar con inopinados triunfos sus grandes amarguras. No bastaba para desmentir y avergonzar a las cien bocas del infierno que cada día dan por muertay enterrada la insti tución pontiñcia, ofrecer al mundo atónito la sorpresa de ver a dos naciones, una de ellas protestante -y poderosísima, resucitar en pleno siglo XIX el derecho internacional de la Edad Media, sometiendo al fallo del Augusto Pontífice gra vísimasdiferencias: como si se hubiese propuesto confundir para siempre la soberbia de los enemigos del Pontificado, hoy, con tan fausta ocasión nos presenta a todos los poderes del mundo, a todas las naciones de la tierra, postrados los pies de un anciano inerme y prisionero. No ya solamente los principes católicos, como el Emperador de Austria, la Reina de España y el Monarca portugués; sino hasta los protestantes como la Reina de Inglaterra y el Emperador de Alemania; los cismáticos como el Czar de Rusia, los ma hometanos como el Sultán de Turquía y el Shah de Persia; hasta los paganos como los Emperadores de la China y del Japón, con afectuosos mensajes y valiosísimas ofrendas rin den a porfía tributo de admiración y respeto al Supremo Jerarca de la Iglesia. Y mientras el Papa levanta al cielo la vay inmaculada hostia. La voz de las campanas comunica al mundo cristiano la fausta nueva, y a los pies de los altares donde se agolpan los lieles, brotan oraciones de todos los labios ylzigrimas de todos los ojos. Millares de peregrinos de todas las naciones, y entre ellos. Tres mil hijos de la cato lica Espana, vuelan a la Ciudad Eterna para consolar las amarguras de su Padre con el testimonio de su inquebran table adhesión; y con los dones que alluyen del mundo ente ro, se abre una Exposición Vaticana, que por su esplendidez y grandeza, por la espontaneidady las elevadas miras de los expositores, que no van a buscar anuncios, sino a demostrar sentimientos generosos, lleva la palma sobre todas las apa ratosas exhibiciones hasta ahora celebradas en el mundo. Manifestación tan espontánea y espléndida es vivo testi monio, a la vez que de la gran vitalidad del Pontiticado, de las universales simpatías que ha logrado conquistarse el insigne León X.... Dirigiendo una rápida ojeada a los diez años no cumplidos de su Pontilicado. Se halla con tal serie de méritos v servicios prestados a la religión y a la sociedad, a la huma nidad, las ciencias y las artes, que difícilmente podrá seña larse en la historia igual espacio de tiempo con tanta fecundi dad de benéticos resultados, doblemente admirables si se atiende a quela angustiosa situación del Pontílice y la penu ria de recursos ofrecen_ graves obstáculos al eiercieio de su apostólico celo y febril actividad.
