Ferm??n Montenegro en el escritorio de la casa Dupont, la primera bodega de Jerez, conocida en toda Espa??a; ??Dupont Hermanos??, due??os del famoso vino de Marchamalo, y fabricantes del cognac cuyos m??ritos se pregonan en la cuarta plana de los peri??dicos, en los r??tulos multicolores de las estaciones de ferrocarril, en los muros de las casas viejas destinados a anuncios y hasta en el fondo de las garrafas de agua de los caf??s.

Era lunes, y el joven empleado llegaba al escritorio con una hora de retraso. Sus compa??eros apenas levantaron la vista de los papeles cuando ??l entr??, como si temieran hacerse c??mplices con un gesto, con una palabra, de esta falta inaudita de puntualidad. Ferm??n mir?? con inquietud el vasto sal??n del escritorio y se fij?? despu??s en un despacho contiguo, donde en medio de la soledad alz??base majestuoso un bureau de lustrosa madera americana. ??El amo?? no hab??a llegado a??n. Y el joven, m??s tranquilo ya, sentose ante su mesa y comenz?? a clasificar los papeles, ordenando el trabajo del d??a.

Aquella ma??ana encontraba al escritorio algo de nuevo, de extraordinario, como si entrase en ??l por vez primera, como si no hubiesen transcurrido all?? quince a??os de su vida, desde que le aceptaron como zagal para llevar cartas al correo y hacer recados, en vida de don Pablo, el segundo Dupont de la dinast??a, el fundador del famoso cognac que abri?? ??un nuevo horizonte al negocio de las bodegas??, seg??n dec??an pomposamente los prospectos de la casa hablando de ??l como de un conquistador; el padre de los ??Dupont Hermanos?? actuales, reyes de un estado industrial formado por el esfuerzo y la buena suerte de tres generaciones.Ferm??n nada ve??a de nuevo en aquel sal??n blanco, de una blancura de pante??n, fr??a y cruda, con su pavimento de m??rmol, sus paredes estucadas y brillantes, sus grandes ventanales de cristal mate, que rasgaban el muro hasta el techo, dando a la luz exterior una l??ctea suavidad. Los armarios, las mesas y las taquillas de madera oscura, eran el ??nico tono caliente de este decorado que daba fr??o. Junto a las mesas, los calendarios de pared ostentaban grandes im??genes de santos y de v??rgenes al cromo. Algunos empleados, abandonando toda discreci??n, para halagar al amo, hab??an clavado junto a sus mesas, al lado de almanaques ingleses con figuras modernistas, estampas de im??genes milagrosas, con su oraci??n impresa al pie y la nota de indulgencias. El gran reloj, que desde el fondo del sal??n alteraba el silencio con sus latidos, ten??a la forma de un templete g??tico, erizado de m??sticas agujas y pin??culos medioevales, como una catedral dorada de bisuter??a.

Esta decoraci??n semirreligiosa de una oficina de vinos y cognacs era lo que despertaba cierta extra??eza en Ferm??n, despu??s de haberla visto durante muchos a??os. Persist??an a??n en ??l las impresiones del d??a anterior. Hab??a permanecido hasta hora muy avanzada de la noche con don Fernando Salvatierra, que volv??a a Jerez despu??s de ocho a??os de reclusi??n en un presidio del Norte de Espa??a. El famoso revolucionario volv??a a su tierra modestamente, sin alarde alguno, como si los a??os transcurridos los hubiese pasado en un viaje de recreo."
