En la Boca de los Caimanes (2017-2023) es la ópera prima en el género de la novela del músico y poeta margariteño Juan Ortiz. Esta es la primera entrega de una trilogía identitaria que narra la historia de la fundación de un pueblo mítico a orillas del mar Caribe donde los eventos más inusuales pueden pasar.
La obra, aunque tiene como referente cultural un pueblo de la Isla de Margarita llamado Punta de Piedras -pueblo natal del autor-, puerto pesquero y de embarque con gran pasado histórico en lo concerniente a la explotación perlífera, no deja de ser una narración latinoamericana que exhibe con agraciadas y delicadas pinceladas la cultura y la idiosincrasia del país del siglo pasado. Las primeras páginas del texto nos reciben con versos introductorios -a manera de prólogo poético- que denotan un enorme apego a un tiempo que ya fue, una gran añoranza aclamada desde el cariño y lealtad de la tierra isleña.
En la novela, aparte de encontrar una estética que cuida cada una de las historias, se recrea y se hace verosímil una profunda reflexión y un afecto inspirado por las lecturas universitarias que el escritor margariteño hiciera de El coronel no tiene quien le escriba (1961), Cien años de soledad (1967), El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985), entre otras del homenajeado Gabriel García Márquez, quien tiene una presencia en ausencia en el relato de En la Boca de los Caimanes.
A lo largo de los treinta capítulos identificados, confeccionados con una prosa esmerada, el escritor logra construir varias historias que perfectamente pueden leerse sin seguir la secuencia de la página -al estilo de Julio Cortázar, propuesto en el tablero de dirección de Rayuela-, sin interrumpir la lectura de las anécdotas que se narran en el texto. Juan Ortiz además alterna capítulos de un tono poético a uno narrativo donde se reúne la nostalgia con el drama, la alegría con el llanto y una constante dicotomía entre lo real y lo imaginario.
En la Boca de los Caimanes, desde la ficción se abraza la realidad puntapedrera -aquella parte que ha servido de fuente inspiradora-, se aferra a todos los aspectos y rincones del pueblo, pues recrea a través de personajes ficticios y reales la geografía, la flora, el mar y la naturaleza del lar al que sentidamente homenajea. Otro aspecto importante y que el autor logra diseñar, quizás desde su formación musical, es el carácter polifónico de la obra. Los distintos textos literarios presentes en la novela, como la poesía, la crónica, la leyenda -una literatura oral que aún permanece en la memoria colectiva-, la narrativa y hasta los implícitos monólogos internos forman un todo armónico que luce a través del coro de voces literarias y líricas. El autor salta de la historia a la crónica y de ésta a la poesía y a la ficción para construir su propio universo en el lugar llamado La Boca de los Caimanes, como lo apunta en las primeras páginas del libro.
En esta creación literaria no sólo describe una realidad social, cultural, geográfica e histórica y familiar, sino, simultáneamente, la realidad individual de cada uno de sus personajes: la historia del autismo de Fiorela, la historia de Yayo Vargas y la Flota Mondequera, la historia médica, dramática y los amores clandestinos del griego Eugenio Crisis -donde lo erótico no deja de sorprendernos en algunos pasajes-, la historia del patriarca y el linaje de los Cedeño y su pasión por las décimas; la historia de Gloria, la vidente, y la historia del artesano del pueblo (un hombre que medía más de dos metros de altura), además de otras historias individuales donde los protagonistas son el viento, la noche, las lágrimas, el amor y el mar -este último se presenta en el relato como una constante que genera un misticismo único y que cobija las interacciones de los personajes y el quehacer diario-.
