L'industrie et l'innovation technique ne sont pas exclusivement le champ d'action des marchands banquiers des grandes cites. Cet ouvrage, fonde sur une enquete au plus pres des sources, et qui emprunte ses methodes a la micro-histoire, restitue une autre realite et propose un autre modele economique des campagnes medievales. Le lieu en est la vallee du Vallespir qui borde le massif du Canigou (Pyrenees-Orientales) et, en particulier, le bourg d'Arles-sur-Tech. Le temps est celui de la fin du Moyen Age, les XIVe et XVe siecles, quand la Couronne d'Aragon s'etend au nord des Pyrenees. Des milliers d'actes notaries temoignent encore aujourd'hui de la passion de l'ecrit qui traverse cette societe de montagne et se concretise dans les etudes des notaires des bourgs et des villages. Les affaires s'y nouent, les contrats sont etablis, les reussites et les echecs enregistres.La vallee du Vallespir est un district industriel, traverse et unifie par des circulations de produits, de capitaux et de savoirs, portees par des entrepreneurs ruraux dont les biographies ont ete patiemment reconstituees. Ces espaces de travail et d'echanges sont aussi des territoires techniques ou se deploient des innovations comme autant d'experiences partagees et simultanees a l'echelle du continent europeen et dont temoigne aussi l'industrie au village.
About the Author: Catherine Verna est professeur d'histoire medievale a l'universite Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis. Ses recherches sont consacrees a l'histoire du travail dans les campagnes de la fin du Moyen Age, a l'histoire des techniques et aux relations entre science et technique medievales. Elle a recemment dirige en collaboration avec Joel Chandelier et Nicolas Weill-Parot Science et technique au Moyen Age (Saint-Denis, 2017). L'ouvrage qu'elle a co-dirige sur l'acier introduit une reflexion neuve sur la rationalite technique et l'entreprise L'acier en Europe avant Bessemer, dir. Par Philippe Dillmann, Liliane Hilaire et Catherine Verna (CNRS-Universite de ToulouseLe Mirail, 2011). Elle dirige actuellement un des programmes de recherche internationaux de la Casa de Velazquez consacre a L'entreprise rurale en Mediterranee occidentale (XIIIe-XVe siecles).
