Cet ouvrage s'est en quelque sorte modele sur son objet en se presentant comme une hybridation aussi parfaite que possible des regards, des savoirs et des discours: de maniere experimentale et inedite, il propose une reflexion interdisciplinaire sur les mecanismes et les enjeux de l'hybridite homme-animal dans la creation artistique, depuis les premiers temoignages laisses par les auteurs anonymes de l'epoque paleolithique jusqu'aux realisations des artistes les plus contemporains. Les vingt contributions ici reunies sont dues a des chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs et conservateurs du patrimoine relevant de plusieurs domaines de specialite - anthropologie, archeologie, histoire, histoire de l'art, histoire des sciences, litterature comparee. Apres un premier chapitre consacre aux principes de creation des etres composites dans plusieurs aires geographiques (Proche Orient, Egypte et Mediterranee antiques, mondes amerindiens) et aux formes de reception de ces images hybrides aux epoques medievale (Centaures et Sirenes) et moderne (monstres imaginaires et rationalite des sciences naissantes), un deuxieme chapitre permet de parcourir les enjeux de telles creations en Mesopotamie, en Egypte et en Grece, jusqu'aux hybrides utopiques de Grandville. Le troisieme chapitre interroge le geste createur depuis l'homme-lion aurignacien jusqu'aux creations des artistes contemporains ( Sphynge en sucre de Kara Walker, masques d'Ensor, portrait de Rosa Bonheur) pour arriver a la collaboration homme-animal-machine. Un quatrieme et dernier chapitre permet d'approfondir la semantique des hybrides ailes dans leur dimension spatiale et symbolique, de l'antiquite classique a l'Asie centrale et a la Chine anciennes, ainsi qu'a l'Orient medieval. Au fil des contributions se tissent ainsi d'etranges correspondances entre les images, d'un continent a l'autre, d'une aire culturelle a une autre, du passe le plus lointain a nos jours.
About the Author: Pascale Linant de Bellefonds est directrice de recherche au CNRS (UMR 7041 Archeologies et Sciences de l'Antiquite). Elle a dirige plusieurs ouvrages collectifs sur l'iconographie classique et est l'auteur de: Aphrodisias IV. The Mythological Reliefs from the Agora Gate (Mayence, 2009), dans lequel elle etudie le traitement sculpte de certaines figures hybrides de la mythologie greco-romaine, notamment les Centaures et les Geants. Agnes Rouveret, ancien membre de l'Ecole francaise de Rome, est professeur emerite d'histoire de l'art et archeologie a l'universite Paris-Ouest-Nanterre/UMR 7041 ArScAn. Parmi ses ouvrages figurent: Histoire et imaginaire de la peinture ancienne (Ve s. av. J.-C. - Ier s. apr. J.-C.), Rome, 1989 et 2014; Peintures grecques antiques: la collection hellenistique du Musee du Louvre, Paris, 2004 (avec Ph. Walter); Couleurs et matieres dans l'Antiquite. Textes, techniques et pratiques (avec S. Dubel et V. Naas), Paris, 2006. Elle a participe a The Cambridge History of Painting in the Classical World, 2015, J.J. Pollitt dir., ainsi qu'a A Companion to Ancient Aesthetics, 2015, P. Destree et P. Murray dir.
