About the Author: Jules Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly est un écrivain français, né le 2 novembre 1808 à Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, en Normandie, mort le 23 avril 1889 à Paris. Surnommé le Connétable des lettres, il a contribué à animer la vie littéraire française de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Il a été à la fois romancier, nouvelliste, essayiste, poète, critique littéraire, journaliste, dandy, et polémiste. Né au sein d'une ancienne famille normande, Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly baigne dès son plus jeune âge dans les idées catholiques, monarchistes et contre-révolutionnaires. Un moment républicain et démocrate, Barbey finit, sous l'influence de Joseph de Maistre, par adhérer à un monarchisme intransigeant, méprisant les évolutions et les valeurs d'un siècle bourgeois. Il revient au catholicisme vers 1846 et se fait le défenseur acharné de l'ultramontanisme et de l'absolutisme, tout en menant une vie élégante et désordonnée de dandy. Il théorise d'ailleurs, avant Baudelaire, cette attitude de vie dans son essai sur le dandysme et George Brummell. Ses choix idéologiques nourriront une oeuvre littéraire, d'une grande originalité, fortement marquée par la foi catholique et le péché. À côté de ses textes de polémiste, qui se caractérisent par une critique de la modernité, du positivisme ou des hypocrisies du parti catholique, on retient surtout, même s'ils ont eu une diffusion assez limitée, ses romans et nouvelles, mélangeant des éléments du romantisme, du fantastique (ou du surnaturalisme), du réalisme historique et du symbolisme décadent. Son oeuvre dépeint les ravages de la passion charnelle (Une vieille maîtresse, 1851), filiale (Un prêtre marié, 1865; Une histoire sans nom, 1882), politique (Le Chevalier des Touches, 1864) ou mystique (L'Ensorcelée, 1855). Son oeuvre la plus célèbre aujourd'hui est son recueil de nouvelles Les Diaboliques, paru tardivement en (1874), dans lesquelles l'insolite et la transgression, plongeant le lecteur dans un univers ambigu, ont valu à leur auteur d'être accusé d'immoralisme. Son oeuvre a été saluée par Baudelaire et plusieurs écrivains ont loué son talent extravagant, notamment à la fin de sa vie, mais Hugo, Flaubert ou Zola ne l'appréciaient pas. Ses héritiers ont pour nom Léon Bloy, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Octave Mirbeau ou Paul Bourget et sa vision du catholicisme exercera une profonde influence sur l'oeuvre de Bernanos.
