Épaisse aussi, bien épaisse était la neige sur les larges et tristes voies passagères. Dans les rues désertes, comme dans la campagne, à travers les arbres, au faîte des édifices, et loin, fort loin sur la baie silencieuse, ce n'était que neige ! - neige ici, neige là, neige partout. Du nord s'élançait une bise piquante qui balayait les plaines, balayait la ville et balayait le lac; de lourds nuages noirs marchaient péniblement au ciel, et ils étaient tout chargés de neige, encore de la neige. Le vent les chassait lentement en gémissant, d'un ton lugubre, le long des artères de la cité. Chacun, chaque chose avait cet aspect triste qu'une journée aussi sombre, aussi glaciale pouvait évoquer. Les maisons elles-mêmes avaient l'air ennuyé et mal à l'aise. Il semblait qu'elles regardassent avec humeur les rues solitaires et se serrassent les unes contre les autres en tremblotant et se plaignant comme de véritables mortelles. Les fenêtres aussi étaient délaissées et n'annonçaient que trop combien peu on s'amusait dans les appartements qu'elles éclairaient. Les quelques traîneaux dont, de temps en temps, tintaient les clochettes à travers l'air froid et humide remplissaient d'une sensation désagréable par leurs sons discords et criards.
About the Author: Henri-Émile Chevalier, né le 13 septembre 1828 à Châtillon-sur-Seine, mort le 26 août 1879 à Paris, est un homme de lettres français. Ayant porté les armes, Chevalier dut s'exiler à la suite du coup d'État du 2 décembre 1851, et séjourna en cette qualité aux États-Unis, où il a donné des feuilletons dans le Courrier des États-Unis, à Montréal où il a écrit dans des journaux démocratiques et occupé le poste de bibliothécaire de l'Institut Canadien. Pendant son séjour en Amérique, il a publié un grand nombre de romans édités à Montréal et plusieurs ouvrages sur la Géologie américaine. Il a traduit de l'anglais le Foyer canadien, de Knot, publié l'Art de la beauté paru sous le nom de Lola Montez, et donné une nouvelle édition de l'Histoire du Canada, du frère Gabriel Sagard-Théodat. Il a aussi dirigé la Chasse illustrée. Ayant accepté l'amnistie en 1860, il écrivit des nouvelles dans des journaux, comme le Pays et l'Opinion nationale, et des séries de romans sur les Amérindiens. Il a pris place au Conseil municipal de Paris et a fini par un enterrement civil.
