Le mal fatigue les regards du Sage, il s'en plaint; on soupçonne qu'il a de l'humeur; on a tort. Le Sage sait que le mal abonde sur la terre; mais en même tems il a toujours présente à l'esprit cette perfection si belle & si touchante, qui peut & qui doit même être l'ouvrage de l'homme raisonnable. En effet, pourquoi nous seroit-il défendu d'espérer qu'après avoir décrit ce cercle extravagant de sottises autour duquel l'égarent ses passions, l'homme ennuyé reviendra à la lumière pure de l'entendement ? Pourquoi le genre humain ne seroit-il pas semblable à l'individu ? Emporté, violent, étourdi dans son jeune âge; sage, doux, modéré dans sa vieillesse[1]. L'homme qui pense ainsi, s'impose à lui-même le devoir d'être juste. Mais savons-nous ce que c'est que perfection ? Peut-elle être le partage d'un être foible et borné ? Au sujet de l'auteur Louis-Sébastien Mercier, né le 6 juin 1740 à Paris où il est mort le 25 avril 1814, est un écrivain, dramaturge, journaliste et publiciste français. Auteur prolifique, l'un des hommes dont la vie littéraire a été la plus active, Louis-Sébastien Mercier, qui s'appelait lui-même le plus grand livrier de France, est surtout connu pour son Tableau de Paris et l'An 2440, publiés avant la Révolution. Il est également l'auteur de cinquante pièces de théâtre et de nombreux essais critiques, et le fondateur des Annales patriotiques et littéraires. Biographie Sa famille Issu d'une famille de la petite bourgeoisie, Mercier naquit le 6 juin 1740 à Paris, quai de l'École, entre le Pont Neuf et le Louvre, où son père, Jean-Louis Mercier, tenait boutique de marchand fourbisseur, et baptisé deux jours plus tard en l'église Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois. Originaire de Metz et veuf d'une première femme, Claude Galloy, Jean-Louis Mercier signa le 24 août 1739 un contrat de mariage avec Élisabeth Andrée Le Pas, fille de feu Martin Le Pas, maître maçon. Louis-Sébastien naquit l'année suivante. Un cadet, Charles André, qui devait plus tard tenir l'hôtel des Trois-Villes, rue de Tournon, vit le jour en 1741. Un troisième enfant, Jean-Baptiste, mourut au berceau. Sa mère mourut à son tour le 30 juillet 1743, et son père se remaria une troisième fois avec Charlotte Spol, qui lui donna une fille, Anne Charlotte.
