Elle était prête à pardonner. Mais l'inflexible estime dont la société l'entourait ne le lui permit pas. Madame Dellion lui fit savoir qu'on jugerait défavorablement une telle faiblesse. Les salons du chef-lieu furent unanimes. Il n'y eut chez les boutiquiers qu'une opinion: madame Bergeret devait se retirer dans sa famille. Ainsi l'on tenait fermement pour la vertu et du même coup l'on se débarrassait d'une personne indiscrète, grossière, compromettante, dont la vulgarité apparaissait même au vulgaire, et qui pesait à tous. On lui fit entendre que c'était un beau départ. - Ma petite, je vous admire, lui disait, du fond de sa bergère, la vieille madame Dutilleul, veuve impérissable de quatre maris, femme terrible, soupçonnée de tout, hors d'avoir aimé, partant honorée. Madame Bergeret était satisfaite d'inspirer de la sympathie à madame Dellion et de l'admiration à madame Dutilleul. Pourtant elle hésitait à partir, étant de complexion domestique et coutumière et contente de vivre dans la paresse et le mensonge. En ces conjonctures, M. Bergeret redoubla d'étude et de soins pour assurer sa délivrance. Il soutint d'une main ferme la servante Marie qui entretenait la misère, la terreur et le désespoir dans la maison, accueillait, disait-on, des voleurs et des assassins dans sa cuisine et ne se manifestait que par des catastrophes.
About the Author: ANATOLE FRANCE Il est issu d'une famille modeste originaire du Maine-et-Loire son père, François Noël Thibault, dit Noël France, né le 4 nivôse an XIV (25 décembre 1805) à Luigné, dans le canton de Thouarcé, a quitté son village en 1825 pour entrer dans l'armée. Sous-officier légitimiste, il démissionne au lendemain de la Révolution de 1830. Il se marie le 29 février 1840 avec Antoinette Gallas à la mairie du 4e arrondissement de Paris. La même année, il devient propriétaire d'une librairie sise 6, rue de l'Oratoire du Louvre. Il tient ensuite une librairie quai Malaquais (no 19), d'abord nommée Librairie France-Thibault, puis France tout court, spécialisée dans les ouvrages et documents sur la Révolution française, fréquentée par de nombreux écrivains et érudits, comme les frères Goncourt. Il s'installera en 1853 quai Voltaire (no 9) . François Anatole naît quai Malaquais en 1844. Élevé dans la bibliothèque paternelle, Anatole en garda le goût des livres et de l'érudition, ainsi qu'une connaissance intime de la période révolutionnaire, arrière-plan de plusieurs de ses romans et nouvelles, dont Les dieux ont soif qui est considéré comme son chef-d'oeuvre. De 1844 à 1853, il habita l'hôtel particulier du 15 quai Malaquais. De 1853 à 1862, France fait ses études à l'institution Sainte-Marie et au collège Stanislas. Il souffre d'être pauvre dans un milieu riche mais il est remarqué pour ses compositions, dont La Légende de sainte Radegonde qui sera éditée par la librairie France et publiée en revue. Il obtient son baccalauréat le 5 novembre 1864. À partir du début des années 1860, il travaille pour diverses libraires et revues, mais refuse de prendre la suite de son père, qui juge très négativement les barbouillages de son fils. Sa carrière littéraire commence par la poésie; amoureux de l'actrice Élise Devoyod, il lui dédie quelques poèmes, mais elle le repoussera en 1866.
