Inhaltsangabe: Zusammenfassung: Gegenwärtig sind in den unterschiedlichsten Sektoren des gesellschaftlichen Lebens Entwicklungen zu beobachten, die von einer Veränderung des sozialen Status des Körpers zeugen. Von der Pluralisierung der Mode über neue Körperpraktiken im Freizeitbereich bis hin zu schönheitschirurgischen und gentechnischen Eingriffen: der Körper scheint zunehmend zum Gegenstand individueller Gestaltungsprojekte und Optimierungsversuche zu werden. Ziel der Arbeit ist, ausgehend von einer historisch orientierten Sichtung der Veränderung der körperbezogenen Praktiken im Zivilisationsprozess (mit Schwerpunkt auf den neuesten Entwicklungen) generelle soziologisch relevante Schlussfolgerungen über den gegenwärtigen sozialen Status des Körpers als praktisch-sinnvoller Einheit zu gewinnen. Nach einer in die Thematik einführenden Einleitung wird im zweiten Kapitel der Wandel der Körperkonzepte seit der Antike diskutiert, wobei insbesondere die jeweils epochal leitenden Metaphern für die Konzeptualisierung des Körpers herausgearbeitet und der Wandel des Status des Körpers im Zuge der Ausdifferenzierung der Konzepte von „Natur" und „Kultur" in groben Umrissen dargelegt werden. Detailliert wird das dritte Kapitel dem kulturgeschichtlichen Wandel der Körperpraktiken gewidmet. Hier werden zum einen in Anlehnung an Elias Zivilisationstheorie die Prozesse der Disziplinierung und Kontrolle von Körperfunktionen und Nacktheit sowie deren Bezug zur Ausdifferenzierung der Sphären von Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit erörtert; zum anderen wird die sozial differenzierende Funktion der Mode, die sich mittlerweile von der Kopplung an eine ständische Gesellschaftsordnung abgelöst hat und sich nun weniger normierten Prozessen individueller Distinktionsbedürfnisse ausrichtet, hervorgehoben. Als anthropologisch leitende Konstante wird „die ewige Sehnsucht nach der Schönheit" lokalisiert, welche sich aber letzten Endes als imaginäre, schwer fassbare und inhärent paradoxe, da sich d
