About the Book

English summary: It might be surprising from a modern perspective that, in theological discourse and in the early modern Inquisition, illusions were considered to be a key demonic-devilish activity. On the basis of this observation, international experts on demonology, theology, philosophy, and natural sciences as well as comparative studies, German, English, and Romance philology, theater history, and art history discuss the effects of demonic connotations and consequences for the semantics of illusions in culture, literature, and art history. In this way, for the first time, the contemporary pattern of arguments and reflections regarding the context of demonic and aesthetic illusion is presented with a particular emphasis on Romance literature. This book shows that the expanding theme of illusion in all of the arts was not understood as simply an affective-element or effect of artistic techniques, but rather the analysis reveals the polyvalence of illusions and the underlying demonic pattern. That the basis of illusions represented an epistemological problem was borne out as a central, even structural, element of the contemporary texts discussed in this volume. This book presents for analysis demonological writings such as the "Hammer of the Witches" (Hexenhammer), Jean Weyers "Five Books on the Fraud and Deception of the Demons, Enchantments, and Witchcraft," (Cinq livres de l'imposture et tromperie des diables, des enchantements et sorcelleries), Jean Bodin's "Of the Demon-mania of the Sorcerers" (De la Demonomanie des sorciers) as well as new perspectives on the works of Aristotle, Bernardo Cardinal Bibbiena as well as Machiavelli and the central texts of Ignatius of Loyola, Pascal, Corneille and Moliere.
