Lieferzeiten, Lieferzuverlässigkeit, Lieferbeschaffenheit, Lieferflexibilität und eine umfassende Information für die Kunden gewinnen an Bedeutung, um Wettbewerbsvorteile zu erzielen und die Position auf dem Markt zu sichern. Sicherstellung einer räumlichen und zeitlichen Verfügbarkeit der Produkte, Waren oder Teile für die Kunden mit einem Übertreffen der Distributionsleistung vergleichbarer Anbieter führt zu neuen Akquisitionen und Umsatzsteigerungen. Um diese Kundenorientierung realisieren zu können, müssen sich die Funktionsbereiche des Unternehmens und seine Lieferanten bzw. der Handel an den spezifischen Erwartungen der Privat- bzw. Ausgehend von dem Ziel des Bestandsmanagements, die Bestände so niedrig wie möglich zu halten, um wenig Kapital in Waren, Produkten, Teilen und Immobilien zu binden, für Produktveränderungen oder -erneuerungen vorbereitet zu sein und Verwaltungs- wie Versicherungsaufwand zu vermeiden, ergeben sich jedoch Konfliktfelder mit dem kundenorientierten Lieferservice.
