"Reisen bildet" und immer mehr Touristen entdecken die ungeahnte Vielfalt der sich entwickelnden kulturellen Angebote. Die Wachstumschancen im Kulturtourismus stehen außer Frage, ebenso die steigende wirtschaftliche Bedeutung für Städte und ländliche Regionen. In diesem Praxisbericht soll die Erscheinungsform der Städtereise näher betrachtet werden. Theorie und Praxis finden sich im aktuellen Beispiel der Kulturhauptstadt Europas zusammen: Sibiu/Hermannstadt in Rumänien, dem jüngsten Beitrittsland der EU, neben Bulgarien. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass Kulturtourismus aus gutem Grund eine positive Imagewirkung erzielen kann und die kommunikative Funktion der kulturellen Großveranstaltung "Kulturhauptstadt Europas" einen signifikanten und korrelativen Beitrag dafür leistet. Im Praxisbeispiel komprimieren sich die Hauptaspekte dieser Arbeit stringent, vergessen dabei jedoch nicht die Kehrseite zu beleuchten. Der Terminus Kulturtourismus zeichnet ein weites und noch lange nicht erschöpfend erforschtes Teilgebiet des Tourismus ab. Diese Arbeit erhebt deshalb nicht den Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit, vielmehr wurden bewusst grundlegende Bereiche wie Kultursponsoring, Rechtsprobleme oder die vielfältigen kulturtouristischen Erscheinungsformen mit ihren jeweiligen Ansprüchen an ein strategisches Marketingkonzept der divergenten Anbieter weitgehend ausgeblendet, da die Berücksichtigung den Rahmen dieser Arbeit zurecht sprengte.
