Leo N. Tolstoi - aufgeschreckt durch die kirchliche Assistenz für das militärische Morden - studiert in den Jahren 1879-1884 die offizielle Dogmatik der mit dem Staat eng verbundenen Hierarchie. Zunächst geht diese Unternehmung durchaus noch mit einer kirchlichen Gesinnung einher. Doch die Lektüre des Lehrbuchs von Metropolit Makarij I. bewirkt eine durchgreifende Desillusionierung: "Wie kann ich noch an diese Kirche glauben, ... wenn sie auf die tiefsten Fragen des Menschen ... mit plumpen Betrügereien und albernem Humbug antwortet". Erst 1904 besorgte Carl Ritter auf der Grundlage einer zuverlässigen Manuskriptfassung die vollständige Übersetzung von Tolstois "Kritik der dogmatischen Theologie" in die deutsche Sprache. Nach über 110 Jahren ist diese Gesamtausgabe mit der vorliegenden Edition (zwei Teile in einem Band) erstmals wieder in Buchsortimenten greifbar. In seinem Schlusswort formuliert der russische Christ eine scharfe Kritik der Priesterreligion: "Jetzt ist es klar, dass das Lehramt der Kirche ... zum ärgsten Feinde des Christentums geworden ist. ... Die Lehre vom Lehramt der Kirche widerstreitet dem Christentum vollkommen. Indem die Kirche von dem Geiste der Lehre abgewichen ist, hat sie ihn so verfälscht, dass sie durch ihr ganzes Dasein zur absoluten Negation der Lehre gelangt ist: statt Selbstverleugnung - übt sie Selbstüberhebung, statt der Armut - Luxus; statt niemanden zu verurteilen - verurteilt sie alle in der grausamsten Weise, statt Kränkungen zu vergeben, entfacht sie Hass und Kriege, statt das Böse zu dulden, mordet sie.
