Es kann einem aufmerksamen Leser nicht entgehen, daB die nach- folgende Untersuchung ihrer methodischen EinsteUung nach von KARL JASPERS "Psychologie der Weltanschauungen" angeregt und beein- fiuBt ist. Sie mochte an ihrem Teil auf die Fruchtbarkeit jenes Systems der Geistestypen hinweisen, das es in besonderem MaBe er- moglicht, komplizierte Zusammenhange der inneren Anschauung sinn- voU zu durchdringen und rational zu formen. Der geschichtliche Hintergrund war mir durch eingehende kirchen- historische Studien, die ich als Vorarbeiten zu einer Untersuchung zur badischen Kirchengeschichte "Aloys Herihofer und seine Zeit" untemommen hatte, vertraut. Die Gestalt HENHOFERS, der sich, ur- spriinglich katholischer Priester, unter schweren inneren und auBeren Kampfen zu dem Glaubenserlebnis MARTIN LUTHERS durchrang, lenkte das Interesse auf ahnliche Erscheinungen, und den Blick fUr die soziologischen Zusammenhange, die auch bei einer Untersuchung des Katholizismus als Geistestypus nicht ganz unberiicksichtigt bleiben diirfen, hatte mir, nachst der Beschaftigung mit MAX WEBER, bereits mein verehrter Lehrer ERNST TROELTSCH geOffnet. Eine Untersuchung, die darauf ausgeht, die psychologische Struktur des Katholizismus als Geistestypus moglichst klar zu veranschaulichen, indem sie die Krisen seiner Frommigkeit darstellt, die bisweilen, aber durchaus nicht immer, zur Konversion zum Protestantismus hiniiber- fiihren, ist nicht auf konfessionelle Polemik eingestellt u'nd will auch keine solche hervorrufen. ' Sie mochte im Gegenteil dazu beitragen, daB die notwendige Auseinandersetzung zwischen den beiden groBen Gestaltungen christlich-re1igiosen Lebens immer mehr aus der unfruchtbaren Sphare dogmatischer Kontroversen oder machtpolitischer Anspriiche hinausgehoben wiirde in die Sphare einer Betrachtung, die hinter den konfessionellen Auspragungen letzte seelische EinsteUungen erkennt und achtet.
